Scrap Metal for Bumpers??

Recommended Posts

Hello all, I hope this is the right place to post, I couldn't really find another fitting place... I am fairly new to the Olympia area and I am looking to build a custom front and rear bumper for my loyale, but I am at a loss on where to look for scrap metal. I am trying to build them on a budget, so I would like to find some places that have scrap metal for cheap. Any ideas of where to start would be great, thanks!

J&J Metals. Over by the Tumwater airport. I heard the old man passed away earlier this year but,his son was gonna continue the business. I haven't been there in a while. Maybe worth a look.

I dont live in Washington but in my experiance, many metal suppliers will have a by the pound scrap bin. I have also had pretty good luck on Craigslist. The only problem with craigs is that the seller will make you take everything for $30, or whatever, and all you want is 2 pcs. I dont know how cheap you are hoping to get your metal, but Ill warn you even scrap is steep right now... Good Luck.

Cheap is always relative :) I don't want to spend lots of $$$ on steel. That's about it. Thanks for the tip about CL, I will have to check it out.

Hmmmmmm.....That Really Sucks. The place is amazing. I could roam around in there for hours. The prices were always fair. The old man,Jimmy Junk, was quite a charecter. All the other employees would weigh whatever you wanted to buy. Not Jimmy. He would look you in the eyes almost as if he was trying to guage how much money you had in your pocket.

Maybe I'll drive by there today and see whats crackin. The place is Huge and all that scrap didn't evaporate.

I might drive by today as well. I don't have to work, and don't have any plans... Post back if you do drive by, and I will as well. I have heard good things about this place, but google said it was closed, sad times

Try your local Fence company. When I was working at one I saw so much waste it was tough to watch. Lots of good pipe gets tossed when they tear down existing old fence.

Also, one day the boys came back with a section of guard rail that I swear if cut would work as a sturdy yet styled heavy duty bumper. Cut the bottom lip of a guard rail horizontally and bend the ends back a little or weld some end cap/flanges....look at one next time and visualize. :)

But try a fence co. for scrap metal.

I've bought from them before, they have lots of stuff but I dont know what they have for scrap.

Easy to get to also, right off of I-5 exit 136B.

Then head south on Pacific and its just past Destination Harley on the left.

There are a couple of metals handlers down here. Hand in Hand is one, they will sometimes let things go from the yard. I'll check with the other to see if he wants that sort of business this weekend.

Ummm, actually NO.

Steel is down right now.

It's a good time to buy some.

Even new isn't a bad deal at the moment.

Stick to the "remnant" bins, and you can do well. I just picked up a 1' x 5' piece of 12 gauge sheet, and (3) 8' lengths of 3/16" x 2.5" flatbar yesterday. I'm looking at a receipt that says $29. That's not bad. This was all bought at Skagit River Steel, and place that is known by pro's to be one of the biggest RIP OFFS in town. I probably could have saved 50% by ordering it out of Bellingham.

I'd say two tube bumpers worth of material could be had right now for around $80. That's new shiney steel with all that beautiful mill scale, and no rust! Just avoid having pieces cut by sticking to the rem bins, and remember that you don't need schedule 80 pipe, or 3/8" plate for a Subaru bumper!!

if you come towards seattle there is a place called Pacific Industrial Supply that has good prices. thats where i get all my metals but its quite a drive for you....

i built a big basket for my rig for about 30 dollars so the bumper wouldn't be much.

http://www.pacificindustrial.com/134/1920.html <---- metal prices by pound / foot, you have to call for current prices because they change daily

Wow, thanks all for the responses! I head up to Seattle every weekend, so I will have to check them out.

Unfortunately my heater core went out, so the bumpers will have to wait for now until that gets fixed, so I won't be able to look for a little bit. I will be able to soon, but I must be responsible and fix the car first :) Again thanks all for the input, and anymore is welcome! I will post back once I am on the hunt again.
