Clutch doesn't quite work(5 speed swap)

Recommended Posts

So I obviously missed something, or got something wrong. I read you can use the EA81 flywheel, with EA82 parts. But, the EA82 pressure plate doesn't fit in the EA81 disc, and the EA82 parts together bolt onto the EA81 flywheel, but there's no pressure.

So what gives?

I think the idea is to use the ea81 flywheel,ea82 friction disk and ea81 pressure plate. I think.

I don't quite understand what combination you are using.

Well I tried to do that, but the EA82 disc wouldn't fit into the EA81 plate. So then I tried the EA82 disc and plate, but when I start to bolt it up, there is no pressure to hold the disc in place.

There are only 2 ways to make it work.

the easiest most sure-fire way is to use a EA82 flywheel and EA82 clutch/Pressure plate.

The other way is to use the EA81 flywheel, EA81 Pressure plate, and a clutch disk for an 85-86 EA82 4wd. It HAS to be for an 85-86 ONLY, they had a round center section instead of the square-ish center like the later one that you prolly have. The later ones will not fit in the EA81 Pressure plate, but the early one will. BUT, you might also run into a problem with the flywheel being thicker than the EA82 flywheel, and what happens is the clutch never fully engages. I had that problem once too, so I swapped in a EA82 flywheel and all was good.

You can make it work with the EA81 flyhweel, EA82 disc and PP. You have to have the EA81 flywheel resurfaced to the EA82 specs. The step is different - thus why you have no clamping force with stock parts. Any shop that resurfaces them should be able to do it.

Otherwise you have to use flywheel/PP combinations that go together (EA81/EA81 or EA82/EA82) and only swap the disc. But as Bill noted above, you have to use a very specific EA82 disc in order to fit into the EA81 pressure plate.....
