Twitch de la Brat
Nice score... But be quick and KILL THAT RUST!!! If you don't you'll be regretting it soon. I believe the BRAT shares the same gas tank with EA81 Hatches, so I would start checking into those for a new tank. Overall I say you scored well. Splinter
Dropped the gas tank off at a rad shop today to see if they can repair it. I'd prefer to go with a repaired tank rather than a used tank that could start leaking again in 6 months... As for the rust, we were planning on attacking the surface rust with a wire wheel, rust converter and por-15 Not sure about what to do with the rust on the underbody, I'm a little nervous about taking a grinder to it, never had to do any serious rust repair before. Maybe I'll see if one of our toyota buddies can give us a hand
ShawnW
Welcome! I also have a Turbo brat. Mine sits far too much. I did a 4spd manual swap otherwise mine is stock. It will say on the intake that its a Turbo and of course have the turbocharger on the passenger side of the engine compartment on the back beside the spare tire. Its a pretty small turbocharger though.
Splinter
Thanks, but we've established that its not a turbo afterall
Splinter
In order to do the d/r swap, either 4 or 5 speed, what would be the ideal donor car? We also want to do the rear disc swap, so it should have those too if possible!
Twitch de la Brat
In order to do the d/r swap, either 4 or 5 speed, what would be the ideal donor car? We also want to do the rear disc swap, so it should have those too if possible! You'll need to be looking at a turbo EA82 car for the rear discs. Then you'll need a carb or SPFI EA82 wagon for your 5sp d/r transmission, driveshaft, flywheel, clutch and crossmember. But I highly recommend buying the clutch set new, and if possible, to make it easier, buy Jerry's (BRATSRUS) 5 speed kit. Or, if you want less hassle, go for the 4sp d/r and its a direct bolt in. You just need the flywheel and clutch set. And it'll be out of another 2nd gen BRAT, a hatchback (not 3 door coupe) or pre-1984 wagon or sedan (very rare to find a d/r sedan, if you do, buy it!!!). Splinter
So it's probably best to buy a 5mt d/r car to swap everything over, and then get the rear discs seperately? I'm no stranger to subaru swaps, My Impreza has parts ranging from 1989 to 2005 on it
Twitch de la Brat
Yes. Turbo cars would have the wrong spline count. They have 25 splines rather than 23 splines like the N/A cars. I believe there are some modifications needed to make the rear discs work, but I'm not sure what all needs to be done. I would ask in the old Gen forum about that. Splinter
Would an 87 Turbo RX make a good donor car? It's got a 5speed D/R
Twitch de la Brat
Would an 87 Turbo RX make a good donor car? It's got a 5speed D/R Heck yes! If its an RX that means its turbo, so you're gonna have to swap out the diff stubs, so you can put 23 spline axles in place of 25 spline ones (which are too long for your car) You can ask just about any off roader how to pull diff stubs. They should know. Chances are it's got the full time 4wd d/r tranny if its an RX, so you're in luck there (they're pretty rare), plus you'll be able to grab the disc brakes! But you'll need the diff as well, as they have a 3.7 diff ratio, rather than a 3.9 like your BRAT. You'll need to swap the stubs on the diff as well. Other than the bit of work you're gonna have to put into it, great find! Make sure you don't damage any of the plastic/fiberglass ground effects on that RX, they're pretty rare as well and many members search for them regularly. Splinter
Awesome thanks for the info The motor in it is apparently over, so he's selling it cheap. I'll pick it up!
Yo'J
Might even have an LSD. If its cheap enough, that would pay for the whole thing( well, make it more appealing or worthwhile anyway:grin:). Nice!
Qman
Would an 87 Turbo RX make a good donor car? It's got a 5speed D/R It'll make a good parts car. 3.7/1 final drive is a step backwards. You can sell the trans, body kit, interior and other tid bits to finance a 5sp D/R with a 3.9 final drive. You can do a diff swap to get the LSD in a 3.9 rear diff.
