Wheel problems

I have been having issues with my front drivers tire it just started up not to long ago. It has been making a light grinding noise around corners and now lately. it has been doing funny things with the tires. sometimes especially on hills when I am stopped it feels like the tire is getting the cue to turn but it does not. Then it peels out a little and moves on. it spins almost internally (I am driving it so I cannot see it it is what it feels like) also several times it has felt like when I have turned the wheel that the tire is moving sideways.(low speed) (again I cannot see it it just feels like it.) I am what most of you would consider a granny driver so the spinning out annoyes me especially when I almost have to peel out all the way up my parents driveway to make it to the top. (everyone else who drives it up that driveway peels out too in my car but other cars are fine. ) I know I need to address this issue as it seems serious but am not sure where to start I purchased some CV axles but Think the issue is beyond that was planning on checking the bearings but do not want to get it half tore apart and then finding I cannot afford to fix it. or in over my head. should I be driving it at all? It only does these things when coming from a stop.

It could be a lot of things. Stripped hub, bad ball joints, bad axle joints..... it's really hard to tell from your description. I think you'll just have to tear into it and find out.

It does sound like you may be in over your head if you have never replaced an axle before. It sounds like there may be more going on than just a bad axle.

I figured it is more then a bad axle. I know I did not describe it good enough, but it is hard to put into words especially since it does not do it all the time and sometimes I wonder if I am just imagining it.It only does weriod things at low speeds (under 10 mpg) and other times like yesterday it is rather irritating when I want to get up a hill and it just does not move for 30 seconds and then slowly spins out and crawls up the hill at a snails pace. (yes it was in the right gear) I guess I will just plan on having someone a little more knowledgeable around when I tear into it and pray the parts store has the parts in so I can get her back on the road in a timley fashion.I was planning on doing it at my brother inlaws anyway (he's got a lift. but is a American made car fan but knows more about that kind of thing)

It really sounds like a stripped hub from your description of it not moving for 30 seconds.... that's a long time and I can't see how it could happen unless the hub was stripped or there were internal transmission problems - but even then you have metal on metal and it should make one HELL of a racket if the hub were stripped, etc.....

You say it doesn't do this in 4WD? That would also likely point to a stripped hub....

What year/model are we talking about?

2 wd 86 subaru gl we will have had it a year in Febuary.

it didn't make any noise when it does it it just doesn't move. then spins (but it sounds like it is internal not the tire turning on pavement. It sounds like it is engaging and wants to move. then it peels out then moves. This has happened only when I am starting out on a hill on the flat it is fine. In reverse it is fine. I have not had any trouble with the tranny other then the last month or two it has made light noises when the RPMs get to middle 3 or 4 kind of a light growly noise but real soft and when you shift it goes away. HOWEVER when I turn the car to the right it makes a grinding noise. THAT had gotten louder then lately it has gotten softer or maybe I am getting used to it. (when it got softer though that is when the tranny started making noises not that they are connected.maybe they are? )The noises the tranny makes you wouldn't even notice unless you were driving and used to the car. IT is really soft. )

It has gotten to the point where I almost do not want to stop at the end of our driveway because of the short steep incline if I keep going I have no trouble but If I stop a few times I have had to back up and get a running start. It doesn't like the dirt to pavement thing. there is a small dip right before you hit the pavement. that is where it feels like the tire is not going the same direction as the car IE car is turning tires are straight. you can hear it drag accross the pavement. and then it corrects after the car gets moving. it handles more like it is sliding too takes longer to make the turn It does not do it all the time either mostly when you take the road from a stop. it has only done this about 10 times now. Once at about 35 when I hit a rut in the road it almost felt like the tire would fall off. all the other times it was at start up on a turn. It has power I can get it cranking on the road and sometimes up to 60 before I realize I am speeding (it is 35- 45 there) .

We are replacing the axles as there is noticeable grease coming from the boots. I think we will tear into it tommorrow and replace the axles and see what we see. (time permitting)

This is an automatic isn't it? Have you checked the tranny fluid? You might need to work on the governor.

Axles are not your problem.

If the governor, tranny fluid, or perhaps the modulator doesn't fix it then you need a new tranny. That thing has definitely had it.
