92 subaru loyale water pump

well. i am the new and proud owner of a 1992 subaru loyale 4x4 na 1.8...and it needs a water pump. ive done many on hondas but never on a suby. the previous owner took the old pump off and broke off a bolt in the block.. -_- so i got the car, a new pump, and 4 new wheels and tires for 150 $ :)..so any help would be greatly appreciated and im glad to be here!

Did the bolt break off at the block or is there som sticking out? If there is some sticking out, spray it with PB blaster and let tit soak for several days. Tap the end of the bolt with a hammer each day and that helps to break the bolt loose. Use a set of vise grips and work the bolt out.

 

If the bolt is broken off at the block, you are going to have to drill it out and unless you have a right angle drill the motor is going to have to come out. There just isn't enough room for a regular drill.

You may be able to use an automatic center punch after spraying the bolt with parts blaster, basically you push it down and make it snap in the direction that you want to go, usually this will work, but its alot easier with the larger bolts. I would give anything a try before commencing with drillage.

help for what - does the bolt still need to come out, you need instructions on the procedures, recommendations on parts...etc?

 

as for the bolt - avoid EZouts like the plague. they do not work - the only thing they work on is easy stuff that will come out with numerous other methods. they break too easily to even be considered a tool (don't ask me why i know this and no longer own any).

 

if there's any shaft left over of the bolt - place a nut over top of the shaft of the bolt and weld them together. then use a regular socket to remove it.

 

get some left handed drill bits and drill it out. the LH drill bits will help turn it out as the metal heats and thins by drilling. if not - just drill it out an helicoil it. that's easy to do. you'll need a right angle drill or right angle drill attachment to do this and probably best to remove the radiator.

 

since you have to remove the timing belts anyway - get the awesome $80 ebay kits that include all new pulleys and a belt. that's what i always used on those motors.
