I have an 86 wagon ea82t with 175,XXX miles on it. The clutch has to be pressed to the floor to grab the gear, anything that lights up operated by a button has to be flicked a couple of times around to work. it has digital everything, "i think" blown turbo, leaking/burning fluid power steering pump, front wheel bearings are loose so it rattles when you slow down. Here's the question. how should i fix all of this if i wanted to upgrade performance wise my ea82-t i know ive heard that they blow up and if thats the case i want to swap an ej20/25 in but i have know idea how to do any engine swaps/custom fabrication/performance upgrades/or let alone know how the stuff in the special boxer engine subaru designed. I need help and i would be much appreciated with any help. im just looking for someone to mentor me along the way to making a true "death wagon" that i can rally around with and have some get up and go. I recently bought a fmic with greddy type rs bov to put on it and hoping to learn everything i can about this model of subaru and its potential in being volatile in performance. thank you

Well, seeing how your not cleaning out your PM box, I'll post this here:

Theres more to it then just slapping a TD04 on. Have you read up on any of the threads involved with the swap? You need a WRX up-pipe and down pipe for the flanges, which need to be welded to your EA82T up-pipe. Then I suggest getting a top mount intercooler as the extra boost is going to heat things up. Look in your Nasioc Chapters For Sale Forum(http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=131), you might find the parts there. Or keep a eye on Craigslist, I found my TMIC there.

Heres a good thread to read also...http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=88249

I also suggest you get a manual and read up on how these engines work, plus do a search here on all the threads about EA82T's.

I can only help so much. I have lots of projects and I'm raising 2 teenage boys by myself. Theres others here that can help, but disregard anything that GD has to comment about on this topic ;)

Another thing is the higher mileage on your engine. If you start doing mods to it, it wont last long, trust me.

He's only going to beleive you till his inexperience catches up to his build then your stories of unicorns and rainbows are going to fade real quick.

Here's the honest truth kid.

You *can* do everything Rob says but he's twice or three times your age, has a ton of mechanical experience, and it took him blowing like three or four of these wonderful little gem's to get to where he's at now, and he's running an expensive, completely rebuilt block. He's got more into that RX than it's worth, and frankly could have bought a used WRX with the price tag.

A mentor will only take you so far. You WILL blow that engine - probably just by driving it like you stole it in stock form. You even look at it cross-eyed with a wrench in one hand and it's done for sure.

Go buy a car with a future.

I won't waste your time and mine by saying anymore. If you want my opinion you can run a search, but don't say you weren't warned.

if you were doing an ej swap, you would be best to have a whole donor car for parts, otherwise you will accumulate expensive parts that you wont be able to do anything with unless you have a full shop or $$$ to throw at fabrication/expertise

you can have fun with this car, but be aware there is NO AFTERMARKET support for these cars, and the only way to get anywhere clos is to retrofit stock parts from later soobs to accept aftermarket parts/mods

if you want to get that far into it, an impreza or legacy is a better platform since anything newer than that just bolts up

just keep the gl-10 as your daily driver, do it good with your wheel bearings, and i suggest a good radiator if he one you have is corroded, since overheating will eat your headgasket in a heartbeat, and changing the radiator is the single best thing you can do for the longevity of the gl-10

expect to have to do a timing belt sometime as well.

just having this car and keeping it going with regular maintence will teach you a lot about the art of having subarus, and make you better prepared to get into anything further once you are familiar with thee cars and how they are

its really a love of it, subarus are subarus, and other cars are other cars, but subarus dont compare to anything else(but they are easy to learn how to be a mechanic with!)

I agree. When I bought my first soob, I didn't know A THING about mechanics. Everything always seemed so complicated and hard to work on. Then I just figured out everything was just nuts and bolts. And you start doing small things and gradually start working up the ladder until you're not only replacing parts with ease, but you're retrofitting newer parts onto your older car.
