missing hose? on '80 brat

Recommended Posts

Hi there everybody, I'm not too knowledgable at all about cars yet, and I was wondering about this little part of a hose that sticks out. If I plug the hose, the engine idles a little higher, And I don't know where the hose originally went. The hose is circled in the pics, just wondering if anybody knew what it is going to/coming from, and if I should re attach it somewhere, or just plug it off.

Sorry about the blurry pics, my camera is cheap. Thanks to all.

A vacuum leak will not really harm the engine, it will just make it run like crap. Most of your symptoms will be at idle... if it even idles at all with a leak that big. You can expect stumbling, poor acceleration and hesitation.

I would plug that line for now. If I remember correctly, it leads to the air intake box where your air filter is. Look at the bottom of the airbox, and see if you find a broken hose or something there.

Also, you should check to see if there are any other vacuum leaks. You can find them easily with a can of carb cleaner. Just let the engine run at idle, and spray carb cleaner around the intake manifold & see if your idle smooths out or increases. If it does, there is another leaking hose somewhere. Pinpoint it with more carb cleaner :)

You should eliminate any leaks to make sure your engine is running its best.
