Santa Fe Imprez Posted December 4, 2009 Share Posted December 4, 2009 Hello all, The blower fan on my wife's Impreza wagon started squealing occasionally then stopped altogether. I checked the fuses and relays - all good. Can hear the fan relay "click" when I switch the fan on. Checked at the connector on the fan and see (varying) voltage as I change the fan setting. So it looks like I'm in need of a new fan motor. The dealer quoted $337 for a replacement. Checked on-line for after-market ones and can't find any newer than the late 90's. Anyone have a suggestion other than junkyard?No, junkyard is your best solution, paying dealer price you would have to question someone's intelligence. It should be comforting to know that Subaru blower fans almost never fail. Most90's, and 80's for that matter, Subaru's still have the originals in them. That's why there is no other new units available - there's no market, demand, or money in it. Even if they made aftermarkets, I'd rather have a used Subaru unit than a cheap aftermarket. Good news is they are also simple to replace, like an 8 year old could do it. So if you're not comfortable doing it, nearly anyone can, a friend, mechanic, doesn't have to be Subaru dealer. You could even have any electric motor rebuilder fix or rebuild yours. Brushes and bearings, they're very simple. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Hondasucks Posted December 4, 2009 Share Posted December 4, 2009 2007 should still be under warranty (3 yr 36,000 miles) The blower in my 90 Legacy quit, I took it out and sprayed some electric motor cleaner into it and reinstalled it and it worked again.. The fact that yours made a bunch of noise leads be to believe it's either got shot bearings, or something is in it. I'd pull it out (3 bolts, you'll need a stubby phillips or an 8mm socket to get them) and make sure it spins freely and there's nothing stuck in it. You might be able to get an older blower unit and swap the housing, they are very similar... My dealership is Subaru/Toyota and I've noticed quite a similarity between the two, I've never tried putting a Toyota blower in a Subaru though... X2 Take it out and see if you can figure out why it isn't spinning first. The squeaking isn't a good sign, but it may just need something simple like a twig or a dead mouse removed from it.
