GeneralDisorder
That's typical of the 4 speeds - 3rd is always the first gear that goes on them. Time for a 5 speed swap. The 4's aren't worth rebuilding or even repairing. GD
hatchsub
Or the next best thing to a 5 speed.....a brand new 4 speed. I say next best thing just because even with it being new it still is not as great as a 5 speed. http://ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=106497

corvette6698512
What do I need to look for to go from a 4 speed to 5 speed in my '83 GL. Does it just bolt in? Sorry for the thread hijack.

You need a 5 speed from an EA82 car, the EA82 flywheel (there are other ways to use the EA81 flywheel but I like the EA82 one better) and either fab a custom trans crossmember or buy a 5 speed conversion kit from Bratsrus1 (Jerry), which includes modified shifter linkages and conversion crossmember, making it a bolt-in swap. -Bill
Breeke
skip third until you can get all your ducks in a row on the 5spd swap...or find another 4spd in good shape, but that's gonna be a crap shoot. -Caleb
hatchsub
Or just double clutch third until you get a new tranny.
Indrid cold
Your just up the road from Jerry (Bratsrus1), several junk yards... you will have to have your drive line lengthend, new cross member part from Jerry and 5-speed but it totally changes the rig... well worth the cost-time etc... Love mine!
mountain brat
5 spd it is i have one it just sucks because i just pulled the motor for a new clutch so if anyone needs a brand new clutch let me know it has only a few miles on it and miles till i get the 5 spd in it even more of a bummer is i had a 4 spd with only 6k original miles that i sold to my buddy in another 84 gl oh well what are you going to do thanks for input everyone

Indrid cold
If that clutch is the same as a 84 Hatch I may be interested... just dirt poor till spring....
TeamCF
5spd swap is the way to go. I'm getting ready to do mine. But it's because 2nd gear is going in my 4spd and you have to hold it in reverse (and it fights hard to get out). 3rd is fine.
()__1337_CRAYOLA__()>
i liked my 4 speed d/r compared to the 5 speed d/r i miss how the 4 speed would fight me with every shift.... with the 5 speed its just smooth no fun at all!
mountain brat
i think i got it covered bill im going to get jerry's kit and i got the 5 spd and will have to take drive line in to get lengthened i wish it was something simple on the trans cause its nice and quiet and clean oil just doesn't like catching 3 gear oh well
The Beast I Drive
It's a Wagon right? You dont need to have the driveshaft lengthened, you can weld on the mounts for the EA82 carier bearing and use a EA82 wagon 2-piece driveshaft if you wanted to, its cheaper..... -Bill
