Would Advanced Timing do this?

On a 93 Loyale Fuel Injected.

A long story, but the guys who did my timing advanced it to 23 degress BTDC(instead of 20 BTDC?) and chose to leave it at that. She started and ran very well for two weeks so I chose not to mess with it. Tonight, (and couple days earlier) now that it's starting to dip cold, she doesn't want to start unless I stomp the gas to the floor.

 

I know about the idle air control valve since I asked a similar question a couple years ago, I'm just wondering if timing could now be a cold issue also. I'm thinking she won't be starting tomorrow morn.

As long as it wasn't pinging before, it shouldn't create any problems when it's colder. The hotter it gets, the more likely you are to see a detriment to more advanced timing. But if you need to push the pedal to the floor to get it to start, it sounds more like a fuel mixture problem. Have you ruled out the fuel pump?

 

My Legacy was having issues a while back, and it turned out that the fuel pressure was bleeding off while it sat. If I turned the car on/off a few times(without starting), it would fire right up. But if I tried to start it on the first time to on after it had been sitting for a long time(like overnight), it would take quite a while of cranking before it started.

make sure the idle air control is working. and this will be run by the engine temp sensor.

 

my sensor is bad, i have to unplug it for the car to drive properly in closed loop, but is a pain to start in 10 degree weather.

 

it will most likely be the engine temp sensor, the one on the thermostat with the green plug

 

try to find one in a junk yard(pocket item) otherwise you are looking at 85 bucks from napa
