Quidam
Hey, You swapped the plug out and verified no change. They're not the problem so no need for new. Doug
corvette6698512
Another problem my wagon has is transmission mounts. Where can I get some new ones, and are there any more solid types that people would recommend? I also want to try to find a 5 speed for a swap. What cars should I be looking at for the swap? I want a dual range 5 speed that I can put in my '83 and keep it all stock(like the shifter and 4wd selector). I also need a oil pressure sender. I think thats about it as far as fixing this thing up to be a good driver.
GeneralDisorder
Could just be a carb adjustment problem then. That cylinder might be leaner than the other's and when you pull the plug wire it's just not making *as much* of a difference as the other's. Hard to troubleshoot without being there. You can adjust the stock carb's idle mixture with the needle valve on the throttle base - they are often blocked with a roll pin so you may have to remove or grind that away first. GeneralDisorder
You want a 5 speed from an '85 to '89 EA82 vehicle (any with that boxy body style of the late '80's but not the '90 to '94 Loyale's - no D/R on them). Yes - it can retain stock appearance on the inside. There is a member here that sells a kit for bolting them up - do a search for it. You also will need the clutch and flywheel that go with the 5 speed as well as it's driveline to the rear or have a new single-peice driveline fabbed up to the correct length for the 5 speed's. This is all covered a lot on here so a search is you best bet. GD
Frank B
Cap. rotor, plugs, and wires. Your parts store may have to order the cap and rotor. Clean up the side of the distributor and see if the sticker(if it's still there) says Hitachi or Nippon Denso so you get the right cap and rotor. Or is that just EA82? I can't remember all this stuff... try for a cap and rotor with brass terminals, not the tin ones. A little more money but worth it in the long run. Frank B
just watched the video, I know, I should have done that before posting ^^ Anyway, That spark is strong to jump that far. Have you pulled the plug and checked spark there? Swapping the plug and wire kinda took care of that I guess. Pulling the other wires makes a noticeable difference right? Is the plug wire worn and grounding somewhere?
corvette6698512
The other three do affect the engine, sorry I didn't show that in the video. The wire has a reasonably low resistance, so I dont think thats the problem. I might just try new plugs, and order a cap and rotor. I sure hope its not to much, I need to save for gas haha. Going from a 55mpg vw to a 15 mpg subie is quite a difference.
corvette6698512
Would a GL10 trans work for a 5 speed swap?
GeneralDisorder
As long as it's a D/R and not a Turbo transmission it should be the one you want. GL-10 is a trim level - it doesn't indicate which transmission the car would have had. Some GL-10's were automatics, some turbo, some not, etc. doesn't really tell us much. corvette6698512
Ok. I asked and he said its 5 speed 4wd d/r. I bought a new cap and rotor. It seemed to make it run a little smoother, but its still not making a difference on that one cylinder. I also got some new plugs, but haven't put them in quite yet. It doesn't make any sense. It almost feels like 4 cylinders(unless they really run that good on 3) but the one cylinder isn't doing anything really. Could it possibly be a vacuum leak somewhere? If so, where would it be leaking to cause that cylinder to not fire?
GeneralDisorder
Could it possibly be a vacuum leak somewhere? If so, where would it be leaking to cause that cylinder to not fire? Yes - a vacuum leak near that cylinder could cause such a problem. Spray around with carb cleaner to find the leak. GD
corvette6698512
Ok I think we figured it out. Hansend23 was messing with it and found a few things that were off. The vacuum advance on the distributor is broken. I unhooked it from the manifold(which i believe is the wrong place anyways) and sucked on it. The distributor didn't advance, and it had an air leak. I unplugged the line and plugged the fitting it was on. I then advanced the timing a few degrees and it totally got rid of the stumble off idle(temporary fix of course). So what is supposed to be connected to the vacuum fittings on the left side of the manifold? I know one is for the air cleaner, but how about the other one? Also, does anyone around here have a spare distributor or at least a vacuum canister for it? Thanks!!
Frank B
Having the vacuum advance hooked to the manifold is wrong, it should be hooked to the carb to a ported vacuum source. Get a manual to see where, I can't remember.
