smallwwb
I have a fuel injected ea82 and I'm pretty sure it needs new/rebuilt heads. Where's a good place to get some in Western Washington? Price? A local guy said they are very hard to find and cost $285 per head for rebuilt.
markjw
You could find a good running motor of less than that price. What makes you think you need new heads? Because it won't start?
Quidam
$285 per head for rebuilt." You can buy New Genuine Subaru Heads for about the same price.
smallwwb
I was told it blew White smoke like crazy the last time it ran about a year ago. Compression is bad, stuck the little lighted camera thingy down into the spark plug holes and there is some rust on the driver's side cylinder walls. New timing belts, new cap/rotor/wires, good spark, good fuel delivery. Seems to be the best option. The motor has 200k, and I've heard the heads on these motors tend to fail around then. You think I can get a decent used motor for $285? Or twice that?

markjw
You think I can get a decent used motor for $285? Yes..Place a Wanted ad in the Wanted section on the forum here. Or,live a little and replace the head gasket/ or gaskets yourself. The process is one of the most documented repairs on the USMB and can be done in a day or two with just a few tools. Search the subject.
akc
Couldn't you just replace the HEAD GASKETS. they are not to bad to do in fact working on mine again today. Search it like the last guy mentioned several people have written on how to..I have been told the heads rarely go bad just the gasket unless it is a turbo. GeneralDisorder
Non turbo heads rarely fail. Pull the heads, inspect the cylinders - if everything is good there have the heads milled flat (~$35 per head - tell them to IGNORE the small cracks between the valves), and reinstall them. Should be good for another 100k till the bottom end has had enough. You don't need new heads - 98% garauntee on that one. You might need a new block - depends on what the "rust" looks like when you get in there. $100 should get you a good used engine - just post in the wanted section of the forum. These are a dime a dozen and so are the heads - whoever told you that is badly mistaken. GD
