RANDOM THOUGHT regarding alternators we all think suck

so, has anyone ever tried to run 2 alternators? maybe install an alternator in the spot of the AC compressor? it'd probably take a custom bracket but maybe it'd work?

just a thouht. curious as to what others (that know more about this stuff than i) think.

I've seen cars with multiple alternators. There's a time and a place for that, but the reality is, most of us just don't draw that kind of current. Frankly, if you're just looking for more charging capacity, go with a high output GM Big case alternator. the 22SI (?) can be had producing over 140amps at idle. If you want to do something like that, check out alternatorparts.com. YOu can get some really manly alternators there. Like out past 300 amps manly. And unless you're running a HUGE stereo system or a large winch or enough lights to keep up with the lighting demands of a small city, like...say...Portland....you're unlikely to need more current than that. and if you do, you can get more than one.

yeah i was mainly thinkin of for those who happen to have an extra alternator layin around and want to run a bunch of lights concurrently along with other gadgets etc. for the work involved i guess a GM/Nissan swap would probably be the better option.

He means the Maxima Alt - they are 90A. GM swap isn't worth it for the 100A version is what the reference is too. The large case GM's that do super-high output are just rarely needed unless you are running serious draw. The bigger you go, the more the neccesity to upgrade some of the harness to avoid potential issues with high current draw and overloading your wiring. If the battery is low for example - the alt now has the ability to melt your harness as the battery will have no issue drawing whatever the alt will push - bigger alt, bigger push.

Stock alts are 50A for EA81, 55A for EA82.
