wtdash Posted December 22, 2009 Share Posted December 22, 2009 (edited) I swapped a '95 EJ22 w/EGR (170K) into a '99 OB (142K) that had a failed crank bearing (?) due to the PO forgetting to check the oil. More info HERE. Before I started the engine, I disconnected the coil plug to turn it over w/out actually firing, 2X....I've heard to do this to ensure the oil gets where it needs to be?? The EJ22 was from a wrecking yard and had been sitting for who knows how long in their warehouse. I drained about 2 quarts of oil out of it before refilling and putting on a new filter. After re-connecting the coil, it started right up (NO CEL!!) but had what I believe was Rod Knock (?) for about the 1st 10-15 seconds. Since it went away I let the engine run 'til warm - didn't touch the throttle. No other weird noises and I took the car for a short drive and all seemed well. hankosolder2 Posted December 22, 2009 Share Posted December 22, 2009 I wouldn't give it a second thought unless the rod knock on startup happens again. Perhaps the oil pump had lost its prime or the filter took a while to fill...or there was an air pocket in an oil gallery. For that matter, the noise could have been a collapsed lifter which pumped up. Sometimes it's hard to tell, especially when you're only hearing the sound for such a short period of time. idosubaru Posted December 22, 2009 Share Posted December 22, 2009 i doubt it was rod knock and i doubt it hurt anything. i've never looked into which EJ's (which got what) but if it has HLA's then that was definitely the issue. engines with HLA's are terribly loud when started after sitting for a long time or being apart. they can sound like they're so bad they're about to die - but then be fine after a few minutes. all the older EA82's and ER27's were like that. so yeah - my guess is just normal acclimation and priming of the valve train. idosubaru Posted December 22, 2009 Share Posted December 22, 2009 hydraulic lifters can make a racket ,easily mistaken for knocking. EJ engines are known for piston slap too - rarer on EJ22's, but still happens, but i'm not sure what years were susceptible to that? 95, yes or no? davebugs Posted December 23, 2009 Share Posted December 23, 2009 MMO, let it warm up. Take for a "spirited" drive. I wait until cold and start and listen closely for rod knock. Then I typically run until warm and change oil and filter again. Usually it's just from setting. BTW this even happens after doing HG's on 2.5's sometimes. Odds are pretty darn good that you're o.k.
