My sabaru Gt legacy 2000 recently died in busy traffic it more or less puttered to a stop like running out've gas. After being towed to a gas station to put more gas in the car it would not start so got towed home.

 

It tries to turn over but won't catch and start, I checked to see if gas was getting through the fuel line and yes it was gushing out, It got spark, I checked each plug indiv but replaced them all anyway it still won't start I don't know if it is the Coil pack or fuel pump or filter. I need help none of my mechanic uncles will help.. well no one will I have no clue what to do, I don't know if I should buy a coil and being so far away from any shop and asking a car question on the internet costs money.

 

Could it be the timing belt? But I don't even know where it's at.. I'm a female and have no clue what to do but no one else will help.

Where are you located? A USMB member may be close by and be able to take a look.

 

Is the Check Engine Light (CEL) on? It should be if its a component that is connected to the computer that has caused the failure to start.

 

If the CEL is on, you should get the codes read. Since its not running to drive it to an auto parts store where they would read out the codes for Free, it may be worth your while to purchase a OBDII code reader. They are about $90 for a reasonable one.

 

Once you have the codes, we could help more.

 

Mileage?

Any Maintenance that has been done?

Details of the failure?

Does it sound like it's trying to start or does it just crank over with no firing of the cylinders at all?

 

The timing belt is right behind the big black covers behind the radiator fans.

You have access to a good crew here. It sounds like you want to tackle this trouble yourself and we will try to provide you with some good info and guidence to fix this trouble. Don't buy any parts until they are proven to be bad. From your description of the trouble I doubt very much anything is wrong with the ignition area.

 

It could be a timing belt problem. It does sound like one of the belts may have broken. If they are ok then one of them may have slipped and made the valve timing change. You stated that fuel is gushing so checking the fuel pressure regulator and fuel pressure may be a good idea also.

I would keep this simple - because you could easily end up with a list of 132 things it *could* be but that doesn't help you. let's start with things you can do right now:

 

First - how many miles?

Has the timing belt every been changed?

Any recent work or info?

 

Is the check engine light on? Have you tried to read the codes read? Good chance there's a code to be read and that could help a lot. (readers are $30 on ebay, excellent thing to throw in the glove box) Or many auto stores do it for free - Advanced Auto, Autozone, etc.

 

How old are the spark plug wires and are they Subaru wires? I've seen brand new aftermarket wires cause a no start - for this particular engine you should only have Subaru wires.

 

Replace the coil with used one, they're a dime a dozen.
