the junk yards are telling me their cross reference covers car with 4.11. mine is a TY754VCBCA Who is right?

 

 

i'd trust the interchange software at the used parts yards. they are very conservative, not likely to make a mistake that will cost you or them money. and as one yard owner told me after i commented that all 90 - 99 front axles were the same, "we pay a lot of money every year to know what fits and what doesn't." he was offended that i challenged his software.

 

if it is an outback, not impreza, it's going to be a 4.11 manual or 4.44 auto.

a legacy L may be 3.9 and 4.11 respectively, but since they both have the 2.5L engine (no more 2.2L engines) i may be wrong about the legacy ratios.

that's why I'm posting. the chart shows my 02 outback as 3.9 My local junk yard has an 03 Baja trans. they think is the correct trans, the chart shows as 4.11... 03 and 04 outbacks are 4.11 someone is wrong. I'm trying to find out

If in doubt, remove the drain plug. Clean and dry one tooth on the ring gear and mark it with a Sharpy pen. Count the teeth.

37 teeth on ring gear = 4.11.

This is because the pinion gear has to have whole numbers. In this case, 9.

37/9=4.1111111111

It is completely a math thing.

If Subaru used 400 teeth on the ring gear and 100 on the pinion it would be

4.0000 to 1 but the small teeth would not carry much torque. 4 teeth to 1 tooth = 4.00000 but 1 a tooth pinion gear is real hard to manufacture.

I have not done the math but the possibilities are very limited. Think about it.

You should be able to determine ratio by checking the option code on the number plate under the hood.

 

For the 2004 models (closest year I could find a manual for) code EC, EK, or K4, Outback with 2.5 will have a 3.90. Code KA outback 2.5 will be 4.11.

 

OR if the label is still on the rear diff, check there for an ID code. Again these are from a 2004 manual but I can't imagine they would be different seeing as the body style is the same.

thanks for the replies. I can check my rear diff. and code and find my final drive ratio. but that's only half the problem. If I can find an exact 01 OB trans. problem solved. I haven't found one. I would like a low mileage replacement. what is the difference in a 05 OB non turbo 4.11 to my 01. or any other year models? this chart on the net may not be 100% accurate

 

carpart.com wants to know if its a legacy or legacy outback or gt. whats the diff. except for the diff.

according to the charts floating on the net, my trans. has a 3.9 final drive. sort of rare. the junk yards are telling me their cross reference covers car with 4.11. mine is a TY754VCBCA Who is right? Any way to tell for sure? Can a pull clutch trans be used? say a WRX.

 

I am going to say that you are right.

 

Both of the charts referenced here show that the trans code lists as a 3.90 FD. I would take the time to check the rear diff to verify that they match as well.
