wtdash
1999 OB, Auto, 142K (just did a 2.2 swap). Symptons: rotational metallic noise when turning left or right regardless of whether brakes are applied or not from the front left/Driver's side @ city speeds. No noise straight ahead or above 40MPH. What I've done that didn't work, w/extra (good) parts I have: - put in another CV axle - replaced the caliper mounting plate as the bottom caliper bolt was rusted solid and didn't move in/out. - ensured the rotor cover/shield wasn't touching the rotor. What else should I check? If it is the bearing, should I just replace the hub? Also, is the upper strut bolt the only alignment-related thing to mark? Thanks, TD Edited December 29, 2009 by wtdash
frogstar7055
Front wheel bearings usually get louder when turning. Bad driver side would be louder turning right as it loaded up,passengers louder when turning left. Just my experience.
89Ru
Wheel bearing is more of a growl and mine got louder with speed, may change pitch or go away with side load (this was the rear, so may not apply) Just a guess, can the rotor back cover (see #13 below) bend and rub against the rotor? Driven through deep snow recently? My '97 obw after sitting for a while made a metallic noise from the front only when turning left at low speed, it went away before I tracked it down. For some reason I can't add this url as an image...says invalid file. http://static.opposedforces.com/epc_img/366494926204.png Edited December 29, 2009 by 89Ru clarify rear wb
wtdash
Just a guess, can the rotor back cover (see #13 below) bend and rub against the rotor? Yeah, I checked the rotor cover/shield, 1st, but thanks for the reminder.
