Will the front claipers off a 2002 outback work on my 09 forester. Mine has the dual pistons and one of the calipers locked up on me today. There is an 02 outback at the JY so I was curious if they are the same.

Aren't you still under factory warranty? I do not know if they will interchange, I would be checking the warranty first.

mike - you meant to say a 99 right?

 

frankly Subaru is out of their mind when it comes to brakes. i wouldn't wait for an answer - i'd read through Jamal's brake thread, it's fantastic and necessary when trying to interchange calipers.

 

did you try cross referencing first?

You would be best to go to the JY and physically look at the brakes. The calipers from an 02 WRX are the same as those on my 99 Legacy, and nowhere other than here did I find them cross-referenced. If you are able to look at the part number on the donor caliper that would be best. You never know.

Thanks so much. I will go over the entire thread. I think I am going to try to rebuild the caliper.

 

Make sure to flush the entire system of new brake fluid. There could be moisture present that caused the caliper to freeze in the first place. Besides, it should be done from time to time any way.

it is amazingly simple, much easier than i ever thought it would be. last one i rebuilt while it was still attached to the car, cake, but it was a single piston legacy that time.

 

it's actually easiest to get the piston out while it's still on the car. with the caliper unbolted so the pistons can come out - push the brake pedal until the pistons are almost all the way out or only held in by the rubber boots. then wiggle them out by hand (have a bucket under the caliper as fluid will obviously come pouring out. takes 50 seconds doing it that way rather than fiddling with it off the car. once the piston is out, remove it and work on it on the bench.

 

if yours was frozen though the piston or bore might be in bad shape though, i suppose it depends where/how bad that is how you proceed.

Turned out to be a stuck piston. Rebuilt the caliper today and now I am driving the cazr again:banana:. couldn't be happier.

 

I really appreciate all of the input. The rebuild was really easy and only took about one half hour. glad I was able to use a lift in a nice warm garage. It was in the 20's all day today.
