1995 2.2L VS 1999 2.2L Difference ?

Recommended Posts

i got a guy interested in buying my engine.

he sais his 99 legacy has 2.2L and he called couple yards asked about an engine. he said the yard people said only 99 2.2l will work.

he wants to make sure my 95 engine will work with his 99 Legacy.

is their any known issues ? far as i know its easy Engine Change.

Greatly Appreciate the Info Guys.

The 95 is a phase 1 and the 99 is a phase 2. Biggest difference besides a few sensors here and there is the phase 2 motor is an interference engine (timing belt breaks, valves get bent). The phase 1 is not (timing belt breaks, put new one on, re-time and drive away)

It's entirely possible to use the 95 engine in the 99, but it's not a quite a "Plug and play" type swap.

not as easy as using 99 intake on 95 block ?

Nope. Intake mountings are totally different because of the Phase II heads.

You will need to swap the 99 Harness and sensors onto the 95 intake.

IAC may be a stumbling point as the Phase II use a 5 or 6 wire setup, as opposed to the old 2 or 3 wire.

correct me if I am wrong but aren't the phase 2 2.2's single port exhaust while the older phase 1's are dual port? I know my 92 ej22 in my brat is dual port but my 98 is single port.
You are correct about the single port versus dual port exhausts.

No tutorial. If you want to sell this guy this engine I suggest doing a lot of searching and reading to figure some of this stuff out.

They are correct:

Exhaust will be different - he would need your matching exhaust manifold to swap into his.

Intakes do not interchange.

The bellhousing bolt pattern is slightly different too - easy to work around but different.

Crank or cam sensors also changed with some Phase II stuff - I'm not sure how/where that change occurred exactly but it could very well be a stumbling block as well.

actually,IIRC it is the late phase I 2.2s that have single port. (95-98)

IIRC, the Phase II (which share heads with the phase II 2.5) have dual ports. (99+)

But again, irrelavant because there are bigger differences.

this 95 had Dual Outports Exhaust on the Heads. so that will be a problem :-\ since i do not have the Y-Pipe.

he finds all this out. he isn't gonna buy:-\

maybe he will since this isn't an Interference engine.

well i'll let you guys know what goes on. and if anyone else asks i'll know how to answer them.

you guys are Great Help

Thanks
