Gloyale
Well after making some Camber corrected HighGuys front strut blocks for Micheal Appel's Lifted GL, we encountered an out of the blue no start. We trouble shoot for hours. Eventually pining it down to no disty signal....but 2 good distys and still nothing. So it's gotta be wiring, right? So we start routing around....tug the disty wire a bit.......and wouldn't you know............. Yeah......someone pryed open the hole in the firewall a bit to get the SPFI harness through......and created a pretty nice jagged set of jaws that this cord (4 wires and shielding) got caught in.......enough vibration and it literally chewed right through it. 20 mins of soldering later it fired right up. "The wires go inside the rubber grommets ......MmmmmKay"

Yo'J
If you run mods like that I hope you carry an extra, extra fire extinguisher:eek:! Nice pic of that! I can suggest my manicurist if you like?
Gloyale
If you run mods like that I hope you carry an extra' date=' extra fire extinguisher:eek:! Nice pic of that! [/quote'] Well, I didn't route it like that. And everything in the harness is fused. All in all, it wasn't a bad conversion, just a bad rub spot. The background of the picture is a bit rat nested from us working in there. Yeah......my hands are permanently oil stained.

GD Yes...perfect. the customer's jaw literally dropped, and he blinked repeatedly in disbelief whn his 85 GL started with the tap of the key and idled smoothly through it's warm up. Thanks again.......Now wanna help me track down the lowlifes that stole the original carb?.....that would be helpful.
WoodsWagon
Same advise goes for EJ swappers, I didn't really strip my engine harness down as far as it could go, so there was a fair bundle of wiring that I had to fit under the dash. With some good stuffing and a lot of zip tys I got it in and never bothered to go back and finish the job. Two years later the car won't start. I check the usuals, then look under the dash. Apparently the harness had been getting pinched by the gas pedal and it had chewed into it right next to the SMJ. The harness then caught fire, burned the insulation off of the wires at the SMJ and shorted together. Separated all the wires, wrapped them in electrical tape and it fired right up. Shoved it deeper under the dash with more zip ty's and threw in a fire extinguisher. I had smelled something smokey, but I figured it was left over from the welding I had been doing on the body. Nothing like having a harness on fire above your feet and not noticing.
phantomcrooner
Two years ago i was flying down the freeway with my wife and smelled plastic burning and smoke started coming out from under the passenger side dash. Then a wire falls out right above her legs, dangling and smoldering, so to keep her from getting burned i just reached over and jerked the wire out from under the dash. Turns out it was a heater blower wire that had shorted out on the body, you can still see the scars across my fingers. lol I was a hero that day!
