I have a 97 subie impreza sport that is having a bit of trouble shifting into 2nd gear, it is worse when its cold out.

MY clutch pads are great, and adjusted correctly. Can anybody help me.

There is also a ton of play in my trans, could that have something to do with it. The play doesnt effect the way the car shifts. Just kind of anoying.

thanks!

Play is most likely from the shifter bushings. Get the car up on jack stands and follow the linkage to the transmission. You will see the joint there. Have someone move the shift linkage while you watch the trans.

Bushings can be replaced and that will take care of the free play.

You may want to go to Lucus gear lube or another quality lube to help the shifting.

After you replace the bushings, make sure the clutch pedal play is properly adjusted. Lastly, don't use Lucas gearlube; it's terrible (search for my post on that). My suggestion is either use Castrol 75W-90 synthetic (what the dealerships use) or Redline 75W-90NS (NS if your transmission is over 100K miles old).

I did the search for you: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=78245&highlight=Lucas
