andrewmiller Posted January 13, 2010 Share Posted January 13, 2010 I have a 97 subie impreza sport that is having a bit of trouble shifting into 2nd gear, it is worse when its cold out. MY clutch pads are great, and adjusted correctly. Can anybody help me. There is also a ton of play in my trans, could that have something to do with it. The play doesnt effect the way the car shifts. lmdew Posted January 13, 2010 Share Posted January 13, 2010 Play is most likely from the shifter bushings. Get the car up on jack stands and follow the linkage to the transmission. You will see the joint there. Have someone move the shift linkage while you watch the trans. Bushings can be replaced and that will take care of the free play. lmdew Posted January 15, 2010 Share Posted January 15, 2010 Synthetic gear oil will not thicken like regular gear oil when its cold. You still get the lubrication protection without the drawbacks. Lastly, don't use Lucas gearlube; it's terrible (search for my post on that). My suggestion is either use Castrol 75W-90 synthetic (what the dealerships use) or Redline 75W-90NS (NS if your transmission is over 100K miles old).
