corvette6698512
So starting today, I was driving my '83 GL when all the dash warning lights came on. The voltage gauge warning light is on(and the gauge runs a bit higher then normal, and goes up with engine rpm). The brake fluid light is on(fluid level is fine) and the warning light next to that is on. The E-brake light is dim but is also on, and when I put the ebrake on, it gets brighter. What could cause this strange problem? All the lights did go out together a few times to come back on in a few seconds. I did drive through a small mud puddle, and it has been raining pretty hard so maybe water got somewhere? Its my daily driver, so I want to get this figured out asap. GLCraig
Those symptoms usually indicate the voltage regulator has gone bad inside your alternator. Use a test meter to measure the voltage at the alternator connection with the engine in the 2k to 4k rpm range. The voltage should stay below 15 VDC. Also test again with the test meter set for AC voltage. It should not read more than a few tenths of a volt AC.
corvette6698512
I'll do that tomorrow. Thanks Craig!
Cougar
The warning lights are in the field circuit for the alternator so they can be tested when turning the key to ON. When the alternator goes bad those lights will be effected as you saw. Replace the alternator with a good rebuilt one and you should be ok.
