thurstenson
I've posted a few times and received some excellent answers. I like this message board. My name is Chris Thurstenson. I live in Siloam Springs, Arkansas. That's in the Northwest corner where highway 412 crosses over in to Oklahoma. I bought a 78 Brat off of Craigslist for my son who just turned 16. He and I are going to rebuild it and keep it running together so that he can learn to turn a wrench. The Brat (car not kid) came with a parts vehicle. I'm hoping to build that as a toy for me. I've always admired the Brats from a distance. My son thinks they're cool. I'm kind of a techie. I do home entertainment and home automation as a career. My son is very much of the same mind. When I was 17 my grandpa bought me a 78 Chevette. He told me that when it broke down I had to fix it or bring it to him so he could teach me to fix it. I learned a LOT on that car. Now when my vehicles break down or need maintenance I do it myself and save a bundle. I want the same for my boy. Glad to be here. I'm already enjoying the benefits of this forum. chris
SunnyHouTX
Welcome Chris, from one newbie to another. USMB has taught and saved me hundreds already just weeks after discovering it!
rainman19154
yo yo welcome aboard. I like your old school ethic ... so many kids today are afraid to get their hands dirty and think if something quits working to just replace it. And you've found a great resource. USMB has a wealth of knowledge and is a great community to mix it up with.

thurstenson
The ones I got were in Mulberry for $800. I got them for 7. A couple of blown engines and a lot of rust, but for $700 it's some good projects for my 16 year old son & I to team up on.

WRX2FFU
Welcome! Nice to see someone teaching kids about this stuff. It is so sad when I see people who don't even know how to check tire pressure. I think it teaches respect too. Your more likley to appreciate things when you have to do them yourself. thurstenson
You've hit on my strategy. It worked for me. I knew that if I broke it, I had to give up a weekend to fix it. I think I was in my thirty's before I ever took anything to a mechanic. I would laugh at the fools that paid someone to change their oil. I actually like that the carbs on these things require some tinkering to keep them running right. He needs that.
