I got a 96 outback the car is not wrecked or was. But my right (pass) headlamp is not fitting in right. Is this some POS aftermarket part or are the legs different from OBWs

and they look a little different ...I think It could be shimmed but the grill wont fit

i was under the impression that all legacy (legacy and OBW) headlights were the same from 95-99.

do you think it was wrecked? you could take measurements of both (the other side too) and compare them.

the grills are different from some legacy models to another though, did you replace that?

the headlamps I got look the same to the naked eye.... to the measuring tape there about 7/8" differ at the grill in the deepness thicker........ Driver side fits with body lines on both hood & bumper corner is tight......... Passenger side is thinner in depth at the grillside hoodline and bumerline does not lineup..... corner is cocked

Again the the car has not been wrecked .....I could shim to fit and it will

but grill wont fit

Ive looked at ebay 95 96 97 are one piece lights ...........97 98 99 are two piece

so im back to is outback different from legacy

Outback is a Legacy with a raised suspension. The bumpers were different, and the grille was taller. There is a recess in the bumper right under the grille on the OB that isn't there on the standard legacy. But the lights should be the same I would think.

Same part number. 95-97 Legacy and Outback.

Those Ebay listings notoriusly overstate what somethiong will fit.

95, 96 = One piece lights

97,98 = Two piece

99 = Slightly different one piece again.

I've got a set from a 95 Legacy L setting in the backseat (sold bumper cover).

A like new set still in a 97 OBW (had recently hit a deer and new OEM lights and Grille). I'll want big bucks for them.

And some strays around. Mostly 95-97 L and OB stuff. I don't believe I have any left that fit the 99's - even to compare to.

Drop me a PM if you have trouble sourcing them locally with what you're looking for and an offer.

You need to dig a little.

Are the tabs just broken?

Aftermarket grille, looking like aftermarket/replacement bumper cover probably.

Hard to tell the extent of your issues.

I'd be happy to sell you parts that I might have but you're almost gonna have to get your car side by side with an unmolested car to figure out what all needs fixed.

Until then you're possibly just wasting money.

I've retrofitted the 95 one piece headlights into a 98 outback that had the 2 piece setup, so they're deffiniately interchangeable. The wiring for the bulbs is different so you have to do some cut and splice. I would take a close look at the body where the headlight attaches. I would suspect that the radiator support area may be pushed in a bit. It looks like the headlight is recessed in in relation to the hood too. Mabe stacking some washers between the headlight assembly and the body and useing a longer bolt would work for you?

check very carful behind the lense for the bracket attaching it to the headlight bucket. they are NOTORIUS for having broken mounts, BEHIND the headlight lens. We had a really hard time finding used headlights for my brothers 99 outback. The tabs on top were broken on nearly all the junkyard ones, then my dad found one that had good top tabs, but after installing, figured out the back tabs were broken, which resulted in the headlight lens sitting back about 1.5" too far.

They made the buckets poorly on these and to find good ones takes mucho time. Even a junkyard sold us a "good" one, that turned out broken tabs, not to mention almost all are pitted, and yellowed to unusable conditions.

after looking at your pic, yes, the behind the bucket tabs on the headlight are fubar'd, the ones that hold the housing to the bucket.

believe it or not nothing is broken or bent .........for those picks I only removed the two bolts you see missing,,, the third one was still in place. Without the third bolt in place I could easley adjust to a perfect fit.

I don't see anything missing. There is no "bucket" on these lights. Adjustment is done by moving the reflector inside the housing, not by moving the whole lens.

What gets me is the position of the hole for that inner bolt on the top support. It looks like it's too far back for some reason. I'll check mine in the morning and see what it looks like.
