All i can find is complete gasket sets $150.00 plus with a bunch of parts I wont be needing so Im thinking it would be cheaper just buying the parts I need.

heres my list so far

2 head gaskets

2 intake manifold

2 exhaust gaskets

2 valve cover gaskets

Is there any thing Im missing

I will also be buying the oil seperator plate

Headgaskets from Subaru otherwise don't do the job.

Spark plug bucket seals should be from subaru.

May as well change plugs while your at it, and a new pcv valve. the very first thing you do after you remove the radiator is to flush it out. Oil + old antifreeze + air = glue.

Plug wires? The timing belt kit looks good, I wonder where he is sourcing the parts from. I dont trust ebay parts for criritcal stuff.

Yes. Have a machine shop check them for flatness. They will take a minimal slice to clean them up (surface finish is importnat to sealing, just cant scrape them anymore). If there is any runout the shop will take care of that too.

I use OEM only Head Gaskets, crank and cam seals.

Intake if needed OEM or Felpro. Same with exhaust and valve cover sets.

I buy probably the same PCI idler kits from theimportexperts.

I use Dayco Timing and accessory belts.

Someone asked this exact question last night I swear.

NGK V-groove cheap plugs (green writing).

I have the rad flushed and pressure tested.

Heads checked, surfaced if needed, and steam cleaned(I believe is what they do in a cool gizmo often overnight).

Could do Oil pump Oring and don't forget ot check the oil pump screws.

Seriousely search here. Some excellent procedures and parts lists/comments.

Usually intake gaskets and be re-used, exhausts are 50/50.

A tube of Ultra Grey for corners on heads, oil pump, baffle plate.

edit:

Something I usually don't mention. Frequently I clean the throttle body and intake while I have the opportunity.

Make SURE you ge tthe crank bolt tight. Break loose the cam bolts BEFORE removing the timing belt.

Again all covered well here.

Good luck.

Whats wrong with fel pro head gaskets on any subaru?

Do a search on Head Gaskets it will be explained. Just ive explained it a few too many times this week, and am tired of retyping :)

I ned to make a memo with that and keep it on my puter. This is only for specific gaskets.

I don't think it matters what head gasket you use as long as the procedure you follow its correct, and you make sure the deck of the block is mint. Which 95% of the time these head gasket surfaces on the block are ruined. I plan on using fel pro headgaskets and an extremely flat deck and head and don't see how a fel pro is any different from a subaru head gasket.

Headgaskets should be OE, everything else should be a name brand.

Felpro has lets say 20 engineers to cover every gasket they make for every car ( I worked for a major auto parts mfg and we only had 5 for our entire product line). Subaru being OE will either asign an engineer or a group of engineers to evaluate a high cost part to see why it is failing. Aftermarket will not, since they usually see engines at the end of thier lives. OE will constantly evaluate untill they solve the problem. Aftermarket will sit on the stock.

Once a problem is solved, OE will put out a notice that all A Hg's are now superceeded by Revision H HG. They will tell all dealers to remove the old design and return them or destroy them. An aftermarket supplier will rarely if ever do that, and whoever has them on thier shelves will run down the inventory untill they have to order H. that may mean going through A B C D etc.

Thats why you buy OE. Also the deeper in the engine and the nore critical the part, thje more risky and foolish it is to rely on a cheap part.

om the 96 - 99 2.5L engine, there is a higher than normal low mileage failure rate. all of the these engine were assembled new, new blocks, new heads new gaskets, at the factory. it does not get ant flatter then that, and the gaskets failed. subaru has solved the problem by re-designing the gasket.

use a subaru gasket.

on 2.2L engines, ... i don't know, maybe not.

Ya that all makes sense, but youd think with the amount of headset FEL PRO would be selling for this motor you'd think theyd catch on to a problem their head gaskets might have. I'm going to have a set for free so itd be dumb not to use them.

Subaru is one of the smallest mfg. Most people wisely use subaru gaskets, Felpro isnt doing a large volume (its listed as low volume in fact) on the gasket sets.

But do what you wish, its your money to throw away.

I know what your saying, if your going to buy any get the good ones, but I was just looking for like some good hard evidence for a reason to not use these free fel pros i have. I'd be throwing money away if I bought subaru headgaskets that arent 100% needed.

it isn't so much the cost of the subaru gaskets vs. free, it is the cost of the subaru gaskets vs. the time and labor, and cost of subaru gaskets if you have to do it a second time.

sell the felpro on ebay and buy the subie gaskets.

I'll second that suggestion.
