billbony
"Check Engine" light came on in my 2000 Outback wagon and it tuns out to be the P0100 trouble code - Mass Air flow. I don't want to get screwed by my local repair shop who immediately told me "oh that's just the beginning!" "P0100 is a pandora's box of trouble!" Is that true? The car is indeed very sluggish and has virtually no power when I want to pass quickly on the highway. Any suggestions?
OB99W
[...] "P0100 is a pandora's box of trouble!" Is that true? [...]Not necessarily. It's possible that the MAF is failing, or there's a bad connection to it. For a starting point, try wiggling the MAF's electrical connection and see if there's a change in operation. Fairtax4me
I had some fun with a P0100 code back when I bought my car. Mine would randomly stall for n reason though, with no other symptoms. Engine ran perfectly, no loss of power, just would stall randomly. Even during cruising at steady speed with the car in gear. Check the wiring in the harness to the MAF sensor for cuts/crimps in the insulation things of that nature. Check inside the plug for corrosion/water/dirt or other evidence that may cause a poor connection.
Cougar
The code states there is a circuit problem with the MAF sensor so like the others suggested, check the wiring to the MAF for a problem.
idosubaru
Find another mechanic if they're that paranoid. MAF sensors are really easy to replace (about 15 minutes). They very rarely fail so they're a dime a dozen used, one of the silliest parts ever to replace new. The only one I've ever replaced was on an old 80's Subaru. Personally I'd just order a used one for $20 delivered to my door and install it. As to your comments Fairtax - you don't say what happened. Did you diagnose, fix it.... I did eventually find the problem to be a broken solder joint. Still running on the $25 junkyard replacement. I may fix the old one and see if it will still work. I kinda tore it up when I opened it.
