JohnKos
97 Legacy. Do I need to remove the headlight assembly to replace the amber bulb? It's all one piece where in the Chilton book it shows a separate housing for the turn signal.
Twitch de la Brat
Ok, you just need to get access. If you can't get to it from under the hood, then yeah, just pull the headlight. Twitch
bheinen74
just follow the chilton instruction to remove the single phillips screw to slide the side marker lens off and replace the bulb . . Or, as we all know, Subaru made 2 different designs, a all n one headlight (silly them cause then the headlight has to be removed) and a 2 piece (good design for when needing to replace indicator bulbS) :-\ maybe the engineer that made them realized it was bad to have to go thru so much to change a silly bulb That engineer must have also designed the rear tailight on the 06 Otuback, there is no quick access panel, and the whole tailight has to come out to replace stop bulb
JohnKos
Maybe I'll just drill a big hole thru the lens... yea, yea... that's it.
Fairtax4me
3 bolts and the whole assembly pops out. The hardest one to get to is behind the grille. Putting that one back is optional. But the grille is really easy to remove. Get out your flavorite flat head screw driver, pull the grille outward with your hand, (start on one side and work your way across). If you look close at the little tabs on top they have two bits on either side that stick out, just pop those in with the screw driver and the tab will slide back. The lower tabs half the time are broken or will break when you remove the grille, but just a quick pull upwards will get them loose. I take them off and put them on the grille before reassembly. Little tab on the bottom that you just slide forward or up (which ever way you look at it) with your finger and it will slide right out.
bheinen74
you really need to put in all the bolts to hold the headlight assembly. otherwise, bulb life is greatly reduced, and your light beam is bouncing all around, very irritating to others when driving along the road. ignore whatever was said about the one behind the grill being optional. its not. You don't want the filament of the headlight bulb bouncing around, unless you have lots of money to replace bulbs that blow alot.
JohnKos
Gotcha, pop grill, 3 bolts, change bulb, 3 bolts, un-pop grill.
