Recommended Posts

heres some specs on some cams I got for a EA82 , not really sure what it all means doss anyone know?? I basically want to know if its for low end torque or for hi RPM power thanks Scott

Intake and Exhaust

Lobe Center seperation= 110.4 cam degrees

Valve Overlap = -16.9 crank degrees

Intake

Valve Opening = -8.4 degrees BTDC

Lobe Center = 99.8 degrees ATDC

Valve Closure = 30.3 degrees ABDC

Duration = 201.9 Crank Degrees

Max Cam lift = .26457 In.

Net Valve lift = .39685 In.

Lobe 'Area' = 19.91 In./degrees

Exhaust

Valve Opening = 32.4 degrees BBDC

Lobe Center = 120.9 degrees BTDC

Valve closure = -8.4 degrees ATDC

Duration = 204 Crank degrees

Max cam lift = .26429 In.

Net Valve lift = .39644 In.

Lobe 'Area' = 20.35 In./Degrees

Looks pretty mild. The overlap isn't what you would want for a high RPM race cam, and the durrations are pretty short.

When you start to see overlap above 40 or 50 degree's you are getting into that questionable idle quality range, and really prolonged durration's are often seen as well - 250+ degree's.

It would likely have less overlap if it were for a forced induction application so it's probably an NA grind.

Sounds like a relatively stock cam with good "street manners".

I don't know the stock grinds for lift and durration so perhaps it's been modified in those respects - though from what I understand of the EA82's you can't change the lift much due to the design of the cam cases and need to be able to insert the cam into them.

Ok, here's the profile of the stock cams these were made to replace, for comparison.

Intake and Exhaust

Lobe Center seperation= 110 cam degrees

Valve Overlap = -37.3 crank degrees

Intake

Valve Opening = -18.6 degrees BTDC

Lobe Center = 117.3 degrees ATDC

Valve Closure = 21.4 degrees ABDC

Duration = 182.7 Crank Degrees

Max Cam lift = .22606 In.

Net Valve lift = .33909 In.

Lobe 'Area' = 15.76 In./degrees

Exhaust

Valve Opening = 20.3 degrees BBDC

Lobe Center = 102.5 degrees BTDC

Valve closure = -18.6 degrees ATDC

Duration = 181.6 Crank degrees

Max cam lift = .22657 In.

Net Valve lift = .33986 In.

Lobe 'Area' = 15.77 In./Degrees

Based on the overlap and the lift, I believe these are mild Torque grind cams, I came upon them second hand though, all I had was the spec sheet for info.

Yeah - based on the stock cam profile I would agree. Longer durration and less overlap. Those replacements are going to work better at lower RPM than the stock profile and probably will result in less HP up high due to the small overlap.

Either that or it's a turbo grind. The small overlap would tend to agree considering the fairly large overlap of the stock cam.... and larger durration and lift is helpful. If they aren't a turbo grind they would probably work well.
