brysawn
I am not doing the swap, I just have a couple questions, so I can decide whether or not to start looking for EJ's. Also, I did search. So my questions are these: What is done with the wiring? Are there company's that make complete conversion harnesses? What about mounts, where, and what mounts? What about the fuel system, drive shaft, and breaks/suspension/axles?
eulogious
I can tell you a little, but I have not done a swap so take this for what it's worth... What is done with the wiring? Are there company's that make complete conversion harnesses? If you check out the retrofitting section there is a sticky with numbchux's write up on the swap and explains the wiring. There should be a link to a pdf in there as well. LOOK FARTHER THAN THE FIRST PAGE. The download link won't work on the first page. Read the rest of the post to find the right link... numbchux also will do the wiring harness as well, for a fee. What about mounts, where, and what mounts? I believe the mounts work with the existing ones, but of course it depends on the car that the EJ is going into. You didn't mention a car, so it's kinda hard to tell you if the existing mounts will work... This is assuming you meant the engine mounts, and not the trans mounts... What about the fuel system, drive shaft, and breaks/suspension/axles? Fuel system, I don't know, need a car to be able to tell you that. The drive shafts should stay the same unless you are doing a trans swap as well. An EJ motor is just motor, so your drivetrain stays the same. You need an adapter plate to mount up the EJ motor to an EA trans... And the breaks and suspension should be just fine. Again without knowing the car it's hard to tell. Most people say that you should do the rear disc conversion for better stopping, but other that that it should be fine. Again, without knowing the car, it's hard to say... Hope that helps. I have done extensive reading on this swap trying to decide if this was the route that I wanted to go, and all my questions have been answered just by reading info on this forum, so I would say you still a little more research to do. Not trying to be rude or mean, just saying But some nice members might chime in to help you along, you never know Good luck! brysawn
Thanks for the info. I have never done a swap before, and this one seems pretty straight forward. The car is a EA82 Loyale
eulogious
From what I have read it seems pretty straight forward. The retrofitting section will have LOTS of good info. There is a post by cmiller that documents a swap he did recently and how to solve some of the issues that come up. It's a good read for sure. Since your car is an EA82 series, it should be a really straight forward swap. numchuck's PDF documents the procedure very well. I am planning on doing an EJ swap and using an EJ 4EAT trans with it, but I am not going to do both swaps at the same time... But this is beacuse I have an automatic. The 5spd D/R is a better trans because of the D/R and works great with an EJ from what I have read. The EJ 4EAT is improved from my design, so it's worth the upgrade. The one thing I have found out is the subaru = lego Alot of the parts are interchangeable even across product lines. It's great!
brysawn
I just read the 25 page pdf, it looks pretty straight forward. But, i don't want to deal with that wiring. It's too much
coylethebarbarian
Numchuck's and Cmiller's write ups are great! Make sure you sift through all the thread of Numchuck's...the initial links he provided no longer exist, as he updated it several times. I'm using those write ups on the swaps and the threads discussing it further for my starting place/wiring info/extras needed.
eulogious
I think chux will do it for about $250 I believe... He has a website that might have more info. There are also a couple of other members here that have done the wiring and will do it for a fee as well. I am not sure who though, so you would have to look into that some more. It seems a little daunting, especially if you are not good with a soldering iron and reading electrical diagrams The wiring is straight forward as well, it's just time consuming to deal with. I think that I am going to attempt to do my own harness when I go to do mine swap, but we shall see how that goes when the time comes. I think that it's going to be something that I work on over time so I can take the time to do it correctly. Man I love Subarus! jrettenmayer
1. Wiring. Easy, just time consuming. You just need the wiring associated with the engine, ecu, and fans. Cut the rest out of there. 2. Mounts. EJ22 bolts right into the EA82. I did not have to modify the crossmember at all. 3. Use an adapter plate (search for SJR Lift...others make them too - ask around) to mate your EJ to your EA's transmission. Then, you don't have to modify anything else. Good luck.
