pickn4him
Hello all, I have recently replaced the timing belt, head gaskets and rear main seal on my '04 Legacy Outback Sedan with the 2.5L EJ25 engine as well as resealed the oil pan. I now have a gasoline smell that quickly comes and goes. I have checked, tightened, and rechecked all the gas lines I had loose and they are all in their proper places. I did NOT loosen any at the quick connects on the intake because I am assuming they are not servicable, which means they have to be replaced anytime they get taken loose there. When me or my spouse will smell gasoline, we open the hood and then can't tell or see any wet areas because the gas vaporizes quite quickly, of course. It's pretty concerning and I don't know what else to do but do a wholesale swap on all the hoses. Ideas?
nipper
It is usually one of the short rubber hoses that go from the fuel rail to the fuel injectors. A shop can peg it down with an emissions sniffer, otherwise just replace all 4 of them.. nipper

D13
I've had this issue for a while now too. I've had a few mechanics look for it while doing other maintenance, but never any successful answers. The smell is bad sometimes and non existent at others. I'd be very interested in knowing what you find. personally mine is a '00 outback Edited February 16, 2010 by D13
94Loyale
Could be non-related to your engine work too. Filler neck? Just check around the passenger rear tire and fuel filler and make sure you don't smell it strong there. Just in case Edit, '04...I've never had a filler neck bad on one that new. So that probably isn't it, sorry! It was too early in the morning for me to catch the year of your car, haha.

timintc
I had the same problem recently after a cold snap passed thru, took my 2000 legacy to the subi guys who said it was a common thing for them to see. Turned out it was a hose clamp that had loosened a bit on a short bit of hose between two steel lines leading to the fuel injectors. It was on the passenger side just above the alternator, had to loosen some nuts to remove a bracket that allowed access to the clamps a quick tighten with a screwdriver and i was good to go. hope this helps
