gettin annoyed!! help??

Recommended Posts

im getting flustered. lol. ive been farting arround in my 86 gl10 turbowagon, and now, when i start it up it wont idle, when it does, it is usually about 550- 600 rpms. the throttle response is lousy (it will lightly hesitate and putter when reving it) and it seems to not have the power it should.

any ideas on the problems? it used to idle high, now it wont idle at all!! occationally a few weeks ago, it left me stranded by not starting at all. (strong gas smell)

its really bugging me so any ideas would be greatly appriciated.

i checked the PCV and it was ok, i cant find any vacume leaks, and on a slightly different note, i dont have any suction! i checked the (vacume advance?) on the distributor, the hose, and it had very little suction, and the same on all other hoses in the engine bay. i dont know what i could be missing, EGR maby?

thanks

remove emissions controls

REMOVE EGR, install block off plate

remove all lines from carb except supply and return

remove and plug all lines^

connect vac guage

adjust idle speed and timing

tuneup

change fuel filters

make sure carb linkages work, lube

make sure manifold bolts and carb is tight, good seals

No carb in a turbo model.. You cant go removing the EGR and vacuum stuff without consequences either.. the computer won't like it.. as a matter of fact, there isn't muchyou can remove from a Turbo/MPFI motor.. you just have to make sure what you have works right.

As shawn asked, did you just tune it up?. does it make a difference if the car is warm or cold? Sounds very much likea vacuum leak, except for the gas smell. Did you replace fuel pump/lines/filters recently? any gas pooling around the injectors ?

How do the plugs look? is it blowing balck smoke?

You said you have been farting around with it.. then it wouldn't idle.. what specifically were you farting around with?

Well, I can tell you, farting around IN your car will create a strong gas smell:dead:

I have a couple of suggestions (seriuosly). Replace the fuel filter. Be sure you clamp off the fuel line first, its under high pressure. Check all the fuel lines to the injectors, these have a tendecy to loosen and leak.

farting arround is just a term i use for driving, putting and doodling arround in,on and with my car.

the car has a little over 184,000 miles, she was running fine. im not exactly sure why its been acting up. it MAY be (i had a post a few days ago about my turbo squealing it turned out to be an exhaust leak) i tore it down and tightened the bolts on the flanges and the squeal went mostly away (missing a stud). i dont think its the intake plenum piping, because im pretty sure its on there better than it was before. again i dont know waht started it so im drawing blanks. the plugs were fine, a light greyish brown.it donesn't affect it warm or cold, so it could be the filter as its loss of power and hesitation but im thinking its vacume or emmisions. besides the gas smell is pretty much gone now. and no puddles other than PS fluid.

and no smoke, that im aware of.

where is that thread on how to scan the ecu? i havnt yet, any tips on how or what to do. i understand the blinking light sequences and all that but i dont even know where the thing is. lol.

thanks for the help, im sure i coulld give more clues but im tired and im on the clock (school) well thanks again for the help and ill talk to y'all later.

goin out on a limb here.. check the catylitic converter.. easy to do.. unbolt the center pipe from the downpipe, tie it up out of the way and start it.. its going to be loud as hell, but if it idles, and seems to run better you got a plugged cat..

me thinks that by you fixing the exhaust leak it created less flow of the exhaust due to the plugged cat.. causing it to not rev, putter, and not idle..

just my .02.. 2 bolts and 10 minutes and its pertty easy to weed this problem out..
