trying to get some past info on my GL

Recommended Posts

hey all, i bought this 1986 gl from pyro926 last november, and i was trying to get some information on where it came from, and who originally lifted it. i know that it had USMB stickers on it before pyro bought it, and i know it has alot of accessories from allied, like the bumper and possibly the lift? the VIN is JF2AN53B1GE483433. i have seen pics of it all over the net, on youtube and even on a VW forum (http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=4613071&page=3). i would really like to know the history of my car, if anyone knows anything about it PLEASE let me know.

I think that was one of AA's builds - as in one of the guys that worked for/with them built it. Probably sold it when they started lifting Legacy's instead - but hell I don't know.

Seems like I remember seeing it at one of the shows.

It is what it is - I don't think the "history" would be that important. It's just another lifted EA82 wagon. People build these and then trade them or sell them when they find out they look cool but are too heavy, underpowered, and the gearing sucks.

Intresting paint job though. Looks like it got in a fight with the VHS of Tron

Hey! I know that wagon...Definitely one of AA's wagons. I actually went to Yakima to buy that thing about 3 yrs ago.The timing belt broke on the test drive and the guy who owned it at the time started freaking out on me about it.

So,I walked.

It had a Ton of good parts on it at the time.Looks like most are still there.

well the reason im asking is because the wiring is completely hectic....and the car is starting to sag on the front passenger side and i would like to know what the make of the lift kit is so i can replace it. and im not sure about the wheels, i cant find any kind of writing or serial number on them that indicates a particular manufacturer.

The wheels are Allied Armament. They are or were a weapons manufacture based in St. Helen's,Or.

That car was called a "test mule" at one time by one of our board members. Test Mule meaning that when Allied got into building custom parts for the Subaru's,they used that very rig to do the Research & Design.

There is somewhere on the interweb, video of that car being launched off jumps,in a manner that you'd think the guys were trying to Destroy the car.

When I looked it over three yrs ago,the front lift blocks were half tore away from their mounting points, the steering column had about 6" of up and down travel to it,from all the hard landing's,and, when I drove it down the road,it was pointing toward the ditch, but traveling straight.

The asking price was about $1200...I was gonna buy it. But,the sellers behaviour...anyways. It had a couple grand worth of parts on it when I looked at it.

The wheels were brand new 27" Boggers and there were five of them. All mounted on New AA wheels.

It had Really nice off-road bumpers on it front and back and the rear bumper had a swing style tire carrier on it. All very well made.

To top it off,it came with a new yakima roof basket, towers and cross bars.

Search Allied Armament on google. Maybe they still have a site up.

You might poke around in Vendor For Sale forums on the board here. A guy who had a hand in building that wagon is named Albie. He's running a fab shop down around Longview somewhere.

BTW...Them wheels are not hi-way legal.

AA doesn't build lifts anymore, but the guy that worked *for* them and did some of the design still does stuff on the side I beleive. I think Albie is his name .

You are better off building your own blocks and repairs - the AA lift block style had some real design flaws - they were just thick walled tubing with washers welded to each end to center the bolts .

The camber on the front wheels wasn't done well either.

The wheels were not made by AA - they were made FOR AA from like Stockton wheel or another of the manufacturers that will take blank's if your desired offset and diameter and punch out whatever lug pattern you want. They may have bought a minimum quantity to bring the price down or something but it's not as if you couldn't call up the same supplier and ask them to make you a set. They weren't particularly cheap - over $100 per rim IIRC. Personally I get the chevy 6 lug trailer rims in 15" for $30 each and convert to 6 lug. Stronger that way and if I bend one I'm not up a poo creek - anywhere and everywhere you can find 6 lug wheels.

Those rims are probably marked somewhere - but it may be on the inside and/or it may have been obscured by the powder-coating process.

When it comes to off-roading it's all about reliability first and replaceability a close second. It may be the greatest thing since sliced bread but if there's a possibility it may break and I'll never find another one - you won't see me relying on it to get me home.

I have not seen videos of this car being beat up. the videos I saw were definitely a different car.

This car actually has USMB history before AA got their hands on it. it was owned by Hillbillyles in missouri, and it had a 4" BYB kit on it then. I don't remember exactly how it happened, but the short version is, it rolled backwards off a retaining wall. He had it fixed, and then ebayed it, and that's how the AA guys got it.

they first used it to take a bunch of pictures of how their lift differed from the BYB one, and then retrofitted their kit to this car. and then it became the showcase car for their parts, bumpers, wheels, etc.

although the black graphics came after they sold it.
