w0rstn4m33v3r
I currently own a 96 Impreza L 5 speed with a 1.8 in it. I really like the square looks that the 90s models have and want to either keep this one and upgrade it or buy a 99 and upgrade that. Ive been looking into the 99 because Ive heard its really common to drop an 04 wrx engine into that with a turbo and so on, but what Im trying to decide on is if it would be just as worthwhile to do the same with the 96. What type and year engines will fit in a 96 impreza L? What other parts and changes will be needed with that? any other tips or advice would be helpful, Im not necessarily trying to build the fastest car ever, but Id like to top about 125mph, just something I can have fun on and off the street that looks good. WRX2FFU
Any year ej20,ej22, ej25 will bolt right in, you can also fit an ez30, eg33, er27. Chevy 350 or and small block v8 will fit with mods. They will all fit. Some of them might be a bit tight depending on the radiator but they all fit. All the ej series blocks are the same size on the outside. I am glad your here but for parts you might check out rs25.com for a lot of suggestions. I have a 98 imp. L wagon and have gotten tons of ideas and bought some good parts pretty cheap there. I have converted the whole front end over to 2.5rs and you can too or get jdm bumpers and stuff as well. The simpleest way to make it scary fast would be do do a turbo motor swap. Edited February 26, 2010 by WRX2FFU
MilesFox
the er27 is actually ea82 based, it fits in the gl's and loyale's bellhousings. a wrx motor will physically bolt in, you will need to swap a turbo crossmember or make a cutout for the up-pipe. the 2.2 were sohc, and according to the wikipedia artilcle on Ej motors, the 99 has the sohc 2.5 engine, for that year only, and then came back in 2005 as the non turbo option. an ej22 out of 90-94 will be a direct bolt on, and you use the ej1.8 intake on the 2.2 to match the wiring harnesses. a 95-96 legact or impreza 2.2 should be all plug and play. otherwise other stuff will fit but be different. but instead of modifications, its more the correct mix and match of stock subaru parts from different models, and such a mixed build will still take any unmodified oem subaru part as a replacement

The thing to think about is, how skilled are you? A lot of the mechanical is basic but the wiring is a bit more involved especially when switching to a newer turbo motor. It is doable but time consuming. You'll most likeley need the car to be down for a while. Even skilled swapers take 2-3 days at least.
MilesFox
the 96 will be just as mod-capable as the 99, since any swaps on either of these cars will involve the same amount of work and parts sourcing. My opinion, the 96 would be the better choice

You are right, all the EJ "blocks" are the same width. Add the heads and everyone is a different width. Fast on and off the street? That ended the conversation for me.
