loyale starter relay???

Recommended Posts

i did searching on the reason why the starter will not work when i turn the key and i saw a few posts that talk about a starter relay. i looked on the wagon for it and did not see it can someone tell me where i might locate this and if the 90 loyale even has one. i leaning towards the connection spade on the starter/solenoid as the problem and i am going to replace that now. but i want to cover all my basis and see about checking for that as well. i turn the key and it clicks but does not turn over. battery good, starter good. so i figure either bad solenoid connection or possible relay:rolleyes:. if anyone give a a place took look to find the starter relay. thank you.

Since the solenoid clicks,it is moving and adding a reley is unlikely to help.

If headlights go dim at the same time, check battery and connections.

If headlights stay bright,it is bad solenoid contacts or less likely,a starter problem.

You OBVIOUSLY have not owned many EA82s have you?

The ignitiopn switches wear out to the point that they can't conduct enough amps to HOLD the solenoid against it's contacts. It clicks, but not with enough force, and quickly disengages.

No offense, but you really are wrong here. There have got to be 100 threads or more about this and after all the chasing bad connections, replacing starters, and other goings on.............the low tech solution is a pushbutton. Others add a relay. I personally like having both....in case the IG switch fails entirely (seen it twice)

This situation is ALMOST ALWAYS remedied by adding a relay or a pushbutton or both.

If this were the case, there would be more than one click.

They just don't come out with enough force for the contacts to close. Usually this is in combination with burned/pitted contacts. The weak amps allowed by the damaged circuit and/or switch can't overcome enough of the solenoid's spring tension to get a solid contact inside the solenoid. A cleaning of the contacts or replaceing of the starter will sometimes remedy the situation for a short time after which it returns and usually just keeps getting worse. Ultimately it's the old wireing in the circuit that's to blame and the addition of a relay typically fixes the problem and it doesn't return. I have replaced EVERY SINGLE compenent of the crank circuit on cars with the exception of the body wireing harness and still had this problem come back. It's a freakin nightmare on some of them - the relay is the only thing that stops it for good.

This is not just a problem with EA82's, nor is it terribly uncommon in other brands of cars - I just did the same fix on a Legacy that the dealer replaced the ignition switch and battery leads on less than 10k miles ago. The problem was exactly as described - intermittant solenoid click but no motor engagement. Added a relay and it starts every time - sold the car and the gentleman drives it every day - haven't heard a thing from him other than he loves the car :).

ok i figured as much after much searching on the wagon. no relay. just burns me that if cross the the terminal on the starter it works great. but then i use the key it works. and then next time key does not work. i am in the process of timing the engine and cant keep dealing with crossing the wires to start it:rolleyes:. i figured of a relay to solve this and have searched and found a few threads to help. got to fix this so i can have this wagon to start by key so i can time this damn thing....lol. i belive i maybe off off by a tooth:-\. thanks for your input.

i hope to hear from daeron on on this.

He's not around much if at all anymore. Guess his pizza delivery EA82 kicked the bucket or something - don't really know.

But I have made plenty of posts on how to install the relay - it's relatively easy. Ask away if you have questions.

I am currently fighting this, although it has been good the last few days. I have installed the starter relay, but it is still flaky. It seems to get worse after a long trip, right now. It used to be the cold that caused trouble, now it is heat?

I found that wiggling the spade connector on the solenoid helped for a day or so, before I put in the relay.

I suspect the next step is to remove the starter and clean or replace the contacts. I suspect they get burnt from making poor contact, so they make poor contact, and get burnt worse...

It may also be the clutch switch, as I find a good hard kick on the clutch seems to help when it acts up. Unless it is just jarring the contacts into making better connection?

I am currently waiting for some serious inspiration to fix it, meaning I am too lazy to pull it all apart and do it properly until it lets me down again.
