Engine cutting out - where would you look?

Recommended Posts

Friends 1996 Legacy Wagon EJ22 Automatic that I picked up and fixed for her cuts out randomly. Never had a check engine light, no other symptoms, just start....drive a bit and it cuts off. Then takes a few minutes to restart.

Otherwise it runs and drives fine, no issues.

I've never seen an EJ have a no start due to spark plugs/wires without it having a cylinder misfire code too. Is that possible?

Crank/cam sensor - they can cause a no start without a CEL too? Anyway to test which one?

My '96 OBW would do a no-start every once in a while usually after it's been warmed up then shut off then I try to restart within 20 minutes. This happened several times before I finally got a CEL which read as a crank sensor. I bought one and was dragging my feet putting it in. Now 15k miles later it hasn't failed to start in months. I'll still change the sensor (especially since I already bought the sensor) but I'll let it ride for awhile longer.

I'd read on here someplace that the failure of one or both of those sensors was common enough that the dealers sold them as a package for a good price. This wasn't true at my dealer so I don't know if you'd find the same thing, but my dealer here is kind of a prick so who knows.

Good luck!

AN analog multimeter can test the crank sensor. Its an ac signal it puts out, a simple hall effect sensor.

ANother is the coils, or the ignitor. And igniotr can drive you batty.

With the engine running, wiggle the main harness connectors, the ECU connectors, the MAF connector, etc......

give a light tap on the MAP see if it changes idle or stalls

Also check/clean the 7 or so main grounds around the enigne bay.
