Scottbaru Posted March 3, 2010 Share Posted March 3, 2010 2000 Impreza RS 2.5l automatic I'm replacing head gaskets, timing belt, WP, etc. I was hoping to leave the engine in the car, positive thinking and all, but the head bolts hit the fenders without clearing the block. So I have the bell housing loose, and the single nuts under the engine mounts off. Hoist is coming, either borrowed or rented. As I pry the engine and trans apart, it looks like more than the flywheel is attached to the engine. Is there anything I need to do or watch for when separating the engine and trans? The engine mounts look simple, do I just take the single nut off the stud coming through the sub-frame under each mount? Or do I have to unbolt the mounts from the block? MilesFox Posted March 3, 2010 Share Posted March 3, 2010 first thing, remove the nuts on the motor mounts where they go through the subframe. remove the 'dog bone' pitch stopper bar at the top of the trans. next, jack up the trans to raise the engine up out of its mount holes. remove the rubber timing plug on the engine bellhousing, and remove the 4 12mm bolts that hold the torque converter to the flex plate. try at all costs to leave the TC with the trans, you DO not want it to come out with the engine because you will have an exxon valdez of ATF i recommend you watch this video, procedure is the same watch episodes 2 and 3 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

It will allow you to pull the engine out at the right angle and makes life easy. And if this is an auto, try, just try to keep the TC in the tranny. LOL. But if not get a large oil pan under there. johnceggleston Posted March 3, 2010 Share Posted March 3, 2010 SPECIAL NOTE: when jacking up the trans do not place the jack under the pan, it will dent and damage wires inside the trans. it does not take much of a dent to be a problem. move the jack forward and jack under the front diff. I have to fly to Boston and Seattle this weekend, kinda hard to keep this project moving when I'm working two jobs. I scanned the video quickly, might have time to watch it at a hotel.
