Ea82 Turbo Disty questions

Depends on what you are doing with it - a mechanical non-turbo distributor isn't going to interface with any of the turbo ECU's so to use one would have to be part of a larger modification that would include ditching the stock ECU. For example - MegaSquirt could run the turbo engine using the non-turbo carbed EA82 distributor (if you used something like the Ford EDIS sensor).

 

Without the CAS signal, the stock ECU wouldn't be able to time the injector pulses. Thus since the non-turbo mechanical distributor's do not have a CAS they are incapable of running the stock ECU's fueling program.

Understood about the ECU...that's what I'm getting at. Megasquirt. So, in the end, a non-turbo disty will work underboost?

Only if you have something like an MSD system that can delay the ignition pulse. You will want to retard the timing a certain number of degree's for each pound of boost and unless the MS stuff has that capability (I'm not sure) then you will need some sort of boost capable ignition controller.

 

If I were doing it I would use the SPFI distributor. It's just a plain CAS disty and they are plentiful. The MS stuff can work with it.

Just for the record:

 

85,86 and early 87 MPFI systems that used the 3 Plug ECU and the flapper MAF have no role in the ignition system. The injectors are gang fired by ignition pulse.

 

The igniton control in those models is run by a seperate Knock Sensor computer.

 

This setup can run a standard magnetic pickup Disty and Coil without any modification to the MPFI ECU. RUN.....but not timing controled....so use with turbos would need to be with care.

 

 

Later MPFI distys are the same as CAS model as the SPFI use, so if you want to go megasquirt, those should be plentiful.
