how do i rear wheel an ej

#1, Why do you want it RWD? They don't handle better in RWD, and if you plan on beating the crap out of it in RWD, it will break. It's also going to be a 1wheel wonder if you're planning on doing burnouts and drifing, unless you weld up the rear differential too.

 

#2 Is the wagon an automatic or manual transmission? That changes what you have to do to make it work. What engine? 1.8 or 2.2l?

 

#3 You have to take apart one of your front halfshafts, leave the outer CVcup and spindle in to keep the hub and bearings together, and weld the center differential. So it's not a RWD for a week and then swap it back to AWD when you get bored kinda thing. It's a fair bit of work.

 

#3 The rear differntial is a R160. I've personally grenaded at least 3 R160s, and that was with a stock 2.2l. I'm talking shattered spider gears, ring and pinion teeth sheared off, cracked carrier housing. Plus lots of snapped off stub shafts, but those are easy to swap. The differential is not built for abuse. It's only meant to take half the engines power, not all of it.

 

You can upgrade to R180's out of a WRX Sti. Or do a custom job using a R200 out of a nissan 300zx. Or a ford IRS 8.8.

 

But then, if you have a manual transmission, you have the rear output gears to worry about. They also aren't meant to take the full power of the engine. I've torn up 2 sets of those in my lifted wagon, stripped every last tooth off of them. Looked worse than west virginia when I got in there. I've seen AWD wrx's tear those up while still AWD by doing donuts and catching traction with the rear end.

 

So, if you want to go for it, and you're prepared to replace a lot of broken parts, I can give you a walkthrough.

well im still new at all this but i do know enof to get me by and i wanted to know because i wanted to use the car for drifting and rally ext and i just wanted to know how i could make it rear wheel drive for when i want to drift but from the sounds of it i should just use an old ea82 car with 2.2 swap or 2.0 turbo but like i said im still new but not my first i was alsow woundering how hard it is to do a 2.0 turbo swap on my impreza wagon the 2.2 is a little lacking i need faster

you didn't mention whether it's manual trans or auto, that's makes a difference.

 

if it's an automatic: force the rear transfer plates to fully locked (easy, just one wire) and remove your front axle, but you'll need the outer cv joint from an axle to install in the hubs so the axle nut is still in place. i know someone that's been driving like this for years and he's got 100 more hp than your EJ22, though he's not racing and flogging it.

 

if it's a manual you'll need to find one with torque bind and run it RWD the same way, with no front axles.

 

or install an older generation style transmission that has a locking center diff and lock it and remove the front axles.

 

i recommend another thread for the turbo swap but in general it's a huge job. everything fits without much difficulty but you'll have all sorts of wiring and electronics to work out - which is complicated and/or expensive. so you'll have to ask more specific questions to find out if you can do it. anything can be done - do some research and ask some specific questions.
