Alright, my ECTS is in need of replacement. While I'm at it, I'd like to replace the sender as well. I've searched for good photos on here, and I only found one photo that really didn't give me any reference. I have an ej22. I've sat there and stared at the engine, in all different directions, angles, and sides I could think of... I can't find the stupid thing. I'm more concerned about the ECTS. Can anyone out there please post a photo with a sight reference as to where it is? If you do, I will forever grateful.

Are you talking about the Coolant temp sensor? On the EJ22, stand on the passenger side of the car. Look where the motor meets the trans. The coolant temp sensor is located on the coolant passage under the intake manifold. Maybe my picture will help? Let us know if this doesn't clarify. I tried to label it as easy as possible.

You can get the CTS out without removing anything else. Leave the radiator cap on, pull out the sensor, put the new one in as quick as possible, and rinse the top of the block down with a gallon of water after you're done. Fill the coolant back up, you only loose like a cup if you do it right.

I should have clarified, by intake, I meant the plastic air intake. Not the intake manifold,lol :) I realize not everyone knows what I'm thinking when I'm typing.

I figured you knew by the pictures and my description. But 91Loyales post stating you don't have to remove anything, made me think about what I wrote. And I would have felt bad if you took the intake manifold off to replace that sensor :)

All is well. I'm actually about to go out there right now to take the intake off and poke around... the picture will be 100% helpful, I'm sure of it.

 

So no worries... there's no way I'd take the manifold off, anyway :-)

If I recall correctly, there are two sensors on the 2.5L one for the ECU and one for the temp guage.

 

There was a photo somewhere? But both of those sensors are in the water pipe that is under the intake manifold. Hard to see but they are there.

The brown thing is the ECTS and I think the blue one is the temp guage sender?

I found them!!! FINALLY!!!

 

I can't, however, seem to get around the wiring harness. I don't want to work around it, as I'm afraid I may break it. I'll probably try to move the metal thing it's on sometime later tonight.

Mike, good pic, but he has a 2.2. The brown connector is for the ECU coolant temp sensor. I can't see it in your picture, but to the left of that sensor is the coolant temp Sender, which feeds the gauge. This is just a single wire.

Arty, You can get a lot more movement out of the harness is you remove the bellhousing bolt that is tying it down, 14mm.

I think Mike was referring to the car he saw, my 2.5 GT... my problem child.

 

However, both pictures were very helpful, because now I know where it is on my 2.5, too, which is the next engine to get the new sensor :grin:

 

 

funny thing about the bolt is I saw that stupid thing, and I thought "I'll just go ahead and remove that. Lemme get my tools out of my wife's car [the 2.5 I'm working on]. Oh no... where's the key?!"

 

Yeah. She had it with her. At work. :rolleyes:

 

Heh, so I got all that way, FINALLY found the sensor... yup. Had to put it back together. Oh well. You guys have helped so much, so it shouldn't be a problem now.

I was thinking of his other Subaru that we had discussed earlier. Can't keep my Subaru's straight!

Haha, I didn't even realize there was another motor being talked about, sorry about that! Glad our pictures could help you out though. It is buried in there pretty good. But you can do it :) The knock isn't really too bad to do either, long extension and a 12mm. A magnet comes in handy to guide the new one down to where you want it. Just make sure to position the knock so it's facing down flat, and the wire isn't pinched upwards on the block.
