87 GL Wagon wiring issues -- HELP! Please?

Recommended Posts

So I just bought myself a pretty decent '87 GL Wagon.

I went to Best Buy yesterday to grab a stereo.

We spent a good three hours trying to figure out which wire is which.

I don't have extra money to pay Best Buy ($69.99) to install it.

If anyone could help with common wiring colors for this model, it'd be greatly appreciated.

Did you puchase a wire harness adapter to go between the existing radio plug and the new radio wiring? If not you need to get one. I think they about 20 dollars. Hopefully you haven't cut the original radio plug off already.

Here is some info that may help you also. The constant power may be just green on yours though.

Constant 12V+Red/Green

Switched 12V+Blue/Yellow

Ground Black

Illumination Red

Doors

Left Front (+)Yellow

Left Front (-)Blue/Red

Right Front (+)White

Right Front (-)Blue/Black

Left Rear (+)Yellow/White

Left Rear (-)Blue/Red

Right Rear (+)White/Blue

Right Rear (-)Blue/Black

2 of the ground wires on the aftermarket radio will not be used?

I'm is the process of put a Kenwood deck in the wifes car, and according to the manual for it "The unit may be damaged or fail to work if you share the ( - ) wires or ground them to any metal part in the car." His best bet is the write up in the USRM. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=50840

one negative lead on the front, and one in the back will not be used. i just tape them off and tuck them out of the way. the stereo will ground to the chassis through the antenna wire. i have always used the common ground hookup every time i have installed radios in older soobs

The DC return path for the radio should have a good ground connection tied to the chassis of the radio and to the car body, seperate from the antenna. It shouldn't have to use the antenna lead ground to make connection.
