mudrat79
I need to know if anyone has used a 97 or newer Auto AWD tranny in an older gen Legacy....? I have a 91 Legacy Sedan with an AWD Auto in it.....It has a bad tranny........ I also have a 97 Legacy Wagon AWD Auto tranny.......with only 85,000 miles on it..... I want to stuff it in the 91, but Dealer says it won't work....??????? Only issue I see it having, is wires not being the same from year to year....???? I already have the 97 motor in the 91 Car.....? so tranny will bolt right up to it... Any info is greatly apreciated...... Thanks, John in Eugene
junkyardgabe
if you do this you have to also change the rear diff because of gearing is different the only one's that will interchange with a 91 is a 90 or 91 . 92 they changed the gearing

richierich
I was going to call you back today but I got busy. No I do not have the tranny. The diffs should be different but swappable The biggest thing is that the plugs on the transmission will be different.
GLCraig
If it were a 4EAT from 90 to 94 I would say no problem. You would just need to swap the front diff, the pinion gear/shaft, re-shim it and swap the wiring. Now at some point in the mid 90's the 4EAT was reengineered, the big difference was with the planetary sets. Also The TCU was reprogrammed for better economy and softer shifts. The one thing that is unknown to me is what was changed with the valve body. The valve body in the newer 4EAT may not be compatible with your existing TCU and your old valve body may not work with the newer 4EAT
byb555
We have done what you are asking. Well we put an auto from behind a 97 2.5 in to a 91 RS liberty. We had to change the computer for it to work. Works but not what I would say is 100%. There may be a slight difference in the wiring and it sometimes has a funny shift to it betweeb 2nd and 3rd. Other than that it is fine. I take it the later model you have has a seperate auto computer? In or around 97 Subaru started putting the auto computer in with the engine computer. Well on the turbo ones any way. We also had to swap the rear diff. Went from a 4.444 to a 4.
