EA82 D/R 5 speed swap

Recommended Posts

I'm looking to swap my push button 4wd 5speed to a D/R 5speed into my EA82 loyale (non turbo).

I've read up and it doesn't seem too difficult. Is it as simple as just swapping it in, and adding a hole for the range selector?

Do the D/R's have different gearing?

No its not just as simple as cutting a hole for the range selector. You have to make/buy tranny mounts/crossmember. Weld/bolt in carrier bearing. Little bit of wiring (if you care). I think 1st and second gear is a little smaller. But I did my lift and swap at the same time, so I cant really say.

its a direct bolt in if you have all the parts. along withthe trans itself, you will need its crossmember, the body bolts for it, the driveshaft(its a different lenght than the AT, and of course, the flywheel and its bolts.

the 5spd dual range is a 3.9 gear. check your rear diff for the gearing on the sticker. if its 3.9 also, you can use it.

there is no mods to the shifter hole. the shifter boot fits in the same holes as the shifter mountf or the AT

pretty simple to do. it will be easier to install the trans if you remove the motor first, swap trans, and reinstall motor. take this chance to do engine seals

Straight bolt-in. No modifications neccesary. Maybe a change to the wireing, and you need to make sure that you get a D/R from an '87 or newer that had fuel injection or it won't have the neutral switch. Older one's can work if you put a switch on the clutch pedal and wire it to the neutral switch lead off the ECU.

Direct swap. Just take the wiring from the S/R tranny and plug it into the new D/R tranny, the only things missing will be the low-range indicator. Grab a shifter console from a D/R car, bolt it all in, remove those stupid vacuum solenoids on the driver side strut tower and away you go!
