I do believe this is the nasties car I have worked on. Service info says heads will come off with engine in car. Left side NO WAY. Never saw so many hoses and wires. Car was pumping antifreeze out the tailpipe so hg or heads are suspected. I always gave the baddest title to the Mazda MPV awd I had.I got so mad at it I parked it for 3 mo when it blew hg. I'm going to loosen engin mounts and try to move engine over a 1/2" to try to clear left frame. If I don't find the cause of leak I may have to park it untill I find a ej22t.

Oh Well.

just pull the whole motor, it will be much easier. do both head gaskets, put motor back in. its relatively easy to do if you go about it the right way

the motor will sit nice in a 5 gal bucket or a milk crate, or on a work bench squared up with 4x4 wood blocks. the trick is to unbolt the motor mounts from the crossmember and jack up the tranny so the motor clears the frame. this will give you better access around the framerails.

The hoses and wires need to be pulled out of the way. Some dissasembly is always required for head removal.

But frankly - it's only about an hour to pull the engine. Which is prefered when you are doing HG's, etc. Then you can do all the seals and gaskets while it's out - clutch components, etc. Just all-around an easier time.

Subaru's - especially the EJ's - are very easy to work on compared to most. Try doing a timing belt on a Honda with the engine in place sometime.

I may try to pull engine. Truly a shade tree operation. I can throw a tranny jack under auto and take engine out. Will consider that. This is my first lego and it is so different fron old GL.

when you pull a ej22 turbo engine, the great part is, you don't undo the exhaust header at the heads. Instead, you unhook the downpipe right after the turbo, near the transmission to engine housing. When you pull the engine, header and all come out.

they really are not that bad at all. The first Subaru engine i pulled was the ej22t like you have. rememember to unbolt the torque converter from the flexplate first thing....there is a handy access cover on the upper passenger side to get to the 10mm bolts for that.

if you have any doubts, you can pm me and i will give my phone number for this. I think i have now pulled, reinstalled at least 6 or 7 ej22t's, and pulled a few ej22's so i can tell you the little things.

Yes they will. I've done it.

But frankly it is pretty damn easy to pull the motor, and then you have better access to all the seal and can do a better install and torque of the gaskets.

If the car is an automatic trans, DO NOT install the intake until AFTER the engine is in and the you get the torque converter bolted to the flexplate. It is simple enough to drop the intake on with the engine in the car, and it totally saves alot of headache trying to tighten the TC bolts. It's hard to get them torqued right with the intake on through the little hole.

Never saw so many hoses and wires.

Seriously?......anything with MPFI will have as many or more wires and hoses.........first gen legacies are actually some of the simplest and most user friendly engine and management systems anywhere.
