methusalah
I just looked at a 1989 GL 4wd wagon with d/r 5spd. Suspension is good, body very good (no rust), interior good but dirty, a/c inop, clutch is bad, and brakes not working right - not sure why, the guy said they'll work, sort of, if you pump the brake pedal (master cylinder or brake booster or...?) It has 254k miles but sounds and runs great, no knocking, ticking or other ominous sounds, trans also works well. Windshield needs replaced and power windows are dodgy (driver's works fine though.) Thoughts on a price, he's asking 750...any help or advice would be great. Thanks all.
WoodsWagon
With a clutch, windshield, and brake work needed just to make it street legal, I'd say 150-200 tops. If it only needed a windshield and was in good shape otherwise, the 750 would be ok. A clutch is $150 in parts plus a weekend's worth of work for an inexperienced home mechanic, brakes are probably leaking some where, either a caliper or a line, so figure $50 in parts at least plus an afternoon of working on those. Windshield is $150 for the new glass, less if you cut it out of a junk car, plus $20 in urethane to glue it in. Another afternoon cutting the old one out, cleaning it up, and getting the new one set in. Power windows probably need the switches taken apart and cleaned in the drivers door, not to hard, but another hour of work or so. Who knows with the A/C, could be a leak, could be a blown fuse, no way to tell without hooking up some gauges. It's also a R12 system, so the refrigerant is getting spendy. In Arizona, A/C is probably a big deal.
Subarule
I think price is an entirely personal perspective. Depends on what you would use the car for. A play-around toy? A daily driver? Something you wouldn't mind if it crashed & burned in a mud-run? Something you want to be dependable for any driver? Something you want to look good and last? Hard to give an opinion on price if we don't know what the purpose of the vehicle might be.
Indrid cold
Arizona probably isn't noted for it's hidden stash of Subarus but I bet they are out there... and cheaper. Even local there are stretches when there is nothing available for 6 months... then there are dozens.... In my area a new front window is like $275. if done by glass shop... agree with other prices... It is a 22+ year old car... it is going to need time... and $ .... if they are hard to come by in the area... $500 tops... If your not in a rush I would beat the brush a bit and watch but it is your call and maybe that is the last roo in Arizona.
Gloyale
jeeze, eveyone here thinks these cars should be free. It's curious people love them so much but think they are worth so little. But in reality, if it has a nice body and a good running motor I'd say 750 is just about right. 600 would be better. It's an 89....that means the most recent D/R trans you can get. Plus It's fuel injected. It has rear shoulder belts but NOT the annoying passive/automatic belts. It's got 4 speakers and a Tach............and uh, oh yeah.....it's a Dual Range How many people on this board have spent $200 JUST for a dual range trans........and yet the car is only worth $150? C'mon. Trans= $200 Motor=$150 4wd rear subframe=$100 Nice unrusted EA body=$200 (almost scrap value) that's $650. can't get somethin for nothin
