Tansmission Q's Single front axle??

'84 GL 4WD

I'll be replacing both front axles this summer and was thinking about driving around in RWD for a couple days just to see whats its like.

 

after doing some quality search time here i still have a couple questions.

 

1. can i really just run in 4wd with only 1 of the front axle removed (stub still in hub)? seems like it would be better for the transmission if both axles were disconnected

 

2. how the heck to i get the inner cv joint apart?? can you really just pop out the balls of the bearing with a screw driver (read that here somewhere)? i was fiddling with one today, seems pretty stout.

Yes...You can run around in rear wheel drive.It's not a problem.Some members say it wears out the rear diff which was not designed to be used that much.Maybe it does maybe not but a couple days sure wont hurt anything.

 

I ran a hatch around in rwd for several months.No problem. I pulled both axles and used a sledge hammer and eye protection to seperate the axle stubs from the rest of the cv.

there is a clip inside the cup of the inner axle, once you remove that, the cup slides off and you can disassemble the axle that way.

 

for the front, you have to pop the end off using a bench vise and a hammer, and some sort of brass drift if you dont want to nick anything.

 

yes you can run in 4wd with only one axle. this is how its done without permanent modifications. just dont go doing clutch drops and you will be fine.

With on;y one front axle removed, the front diff spiders will be spinning very fast.

 

Best to remove both to run RWD.

 

Do not run RWD only with an auto trans (3at) the transfer clutches were not meant to take it, and will start to slip after the get too hot.

 

If you have a 4spd, you can, but it's not a good idea really, the transfer output gear has very small teeth that engage it.
