Trans problem's, maybe less.

Recommended Posts

Okay, i looked through the forums, and i couldn't find anything about this.

1988 GL-10 (i think) 1.8 non turbo, 3AT, FWD.

When i shift into drive, nothing happens, but the speedo reads 15.

I thought at first the CV shaft was done, but could it just be that castle nut and pin? I haven't had a chance to check because it's midnight, and I'm afraid if i start it it will mess it up worse. Any suggestions?

when it's in park, it acts like it's in neutral, which leads me to believe CV. The boot on the CV is ripped clean in half on the pass side, but the driver boot is still good. What I'm wondering is, why doesn't the driver wheel grab?

are the cv's driven off each other, or both off the trans? I used to mess with civics alot, but i never had to replace a cv, usually it was motor swaps.

And that leads me to this. I haven't looked for this one yet, so don't flame me if it's been asked.

I want to make this car AWD, and i figure, what the hell, its broke, might as well upgrade while its being torn down. What goes in it (trans code), where can i find a MT AWD drivetrain, and how difficult is this going to be? I read the write-up on the AT to MT, and those are easy. My 89 supra got an MT.

I'm in Kansas, and i don't have a problem driving to a bordering state to get a good, working, nothing needs replaced drivetrain.

sounds like you have a stripped hub. the axle is turning with the front diff and turnoing the speedo, but if you look at the hub, the axle is spinning and the hub is not.

hub failures are caused by loose axle nuts. the hub is softer metal than the axle, and its splines will go. you can replace the hub using the same axle to get goin on the road again.

any 4 lug hub will work regardless of model, year, or driveline. the hub bolts onto the rotor, you can probably get one for 10 bucks

It's a broken C/V.

Do a Google or Wiki search for information about how a Differential works.

4wd swap is easy, bolt on from a 4wd model of same car. AWD swap is possible but will require a custom work. Modified linkage, shortened driveline, Turbo axles.

Use the search tool.

If the parking brake works well, put it all the way on (step on the footbrake with the engine running, and pull on the e-brake handle at the same time), put it in drive, and let it idle at 15mph. Get out and look to see what's spinning and what isn't. That will tell you CV vs hub splines vs spider gears.
