OK. tonight i am ACTUALLY going to start removing the rusty ************ from the wells. its gonna be sunny for the next few days so i can rely on my motorcycle and 2-stroke bicycle for transportation. i just wish i had a small trailer to pull behind the bike or cycle. doh.

 

i'll post pics of the carnage. :)

got a later start and then had to change the wifes rear tires on her outback, but while i had some daylight i did this to the rear passenger side.

whatcha think? still salvagable? there is definately more to be removed from the area.

 

think i'll still have rear seats when this is all done? (i dont really care one way or the other, i always have them folded down anyways for the dog to sit back there.

 

I think i'll take the motorcycle to work tomorrow. LOL. on the other hand, the shock mount feels pretty rigid yet. so thats a good sign for sure!! :banana:

So once you get to the stage where your ready for welding, who are you gonna have do it? Paul? Fox could prolly do it if time allows. and i would trust Fox more then Paul as it sounds like he wanted to do a bunch of other crap and doesn't really get the whole old Subaru thing judging from his attitude.

i'll probably enlist fox to help with that, i think a roll cage would be cool BUT.... i need to buy the wheels, tires, lift, new laptop (hopefully, but its gonna cost like $900 or so to do what i need it to do:/ )

a cage would definately be a bit of over engineering on that. LOL.. maybe if i was planning to do some crazy off road ************, but most likely its not goin to see that much action offroad.

 

if we could re inforce the strut braces somehow while weldin in the new wheel wells, that'd be cool.

But really, these cars are built as is, the strut mounts don't really need any reinforcement as long as the well is solid (Which your gonna fix) - you could jump this car many times and nor bend/buckle those mounts, the front towers might rip but dout it. The struts would crack before the unibody :)

Its do-able.

 

I still drive that wagon every day down bumpy back dirt roads on my way to work. Holdin strong.

yeah, i just need to find something to roll in while this is in progress. currently i just drive the car with a huge hole in the wheel well. haha.

 

it was funny hackin up the car, then getting in it and driving to the store to buy a tool to hack it up more.

You dork, why did you hack it up before you had your replacement parts.

 

thats an easy one... basically because i dont really know what the hell im doing.

its not that i am not mechanically inclined, but i've never had to attempt something of this nature before, if it was just body work on the outside of the car that'd be different, im way more confident with that task than this one.

 

im pickin up a 94 legacy to drive around while this project is in the works. so then i can get the wheels and suspension outta the way etc. good timing to, im almost out of gas!

so i went to my favorite junkyard today to look for a TPS for our outback, and low and behold what did i see out of the corner of my eye behind another car......

oh snap! sweet, so i thouht... i better strip out the rear interior and see whats up in the wheel wells, so maybe i could cut them out tomorrow when i have some more time.

Guy at the yard said it'd be like $80 for the wheel wells, but it looks like these if i could cut them out would be alot easier to repair while out of the car, and then mark and cut the space for them in my car and weld up the seams.

 

think thats a good idea??? it sounds good to me,he said they would move the car out for me to work on it, i just need to find something to cut with, i am hoping if i bring a electric sawzall they'd atleast bring the car somewhere near an outlet, or atleast 100ft from one, as i have a 100ft cord.

To bad I don't have a power inverter in my car yet, that would help ya :)

 

 

haha yeah, i have one, but its only 400 watts, i dont think that'd be enough to run a sawzall or a angle grinder with a cutoff wheel on it.

How many Volts does it produce? I know the one in the FJ can power a small fridge!

its produces standard AC Power @ 110volts, but a maximum of 400 watts....

 

using the PIE equation:

P = I * E

Power (watts) = Currant(amps)* Voltage(volts!:eek:)

400 watts = x *110

400 watts / 110v = x

 

x= about 3.6amps so, anything over 3.6 amps will overheat or blow a fuse on the inverter. it'd probably spin the tools up fine, but when you start cuttin, the amps may rise due to the resistance against the motor y0!

 

I is smart.

 

i think my inverter could power a blender. according to the package when i got it. haha.

 

They DID have also for sale at the junkyard an Outback sport for $800, but i dont know if it ran or not or anything else about it for that matter.

Slowly making progress on this. i have some giant gaping holes at the moment. (in the car!!)

 

was going to post a pic or 2 but my camera was dead and it was too dark for cell phone pic.

 

the strut towers look in pretty good shape so thats promising.

lol. well i only have my spare time to work on this. which is typically after 4pm until dark amongst all the other bs i have to do on a daily basis.

 

its movin along much better now that i have an actual cutting wheel for my angle grinder vs just the grindin wheel.

the freeway is fairly smooth. i had to drive down 2nd street on the souf side to pick the dog up, i didnt know it was under construction. typically its the worst road in the city, and being under construction sure didnt help it at all. made it worse!

I hope this isnt your daily driver. What was the plan exactly, just cut it up then go from there.

you bet its my DD!

 

right now my daily driver is my motorcycle on dry days, the bus on wet days when i cant take my wifes Outback or get a ride. i did drive it yesterday to my bowling league which was a treat, before i left i had to remove the wheel so i could fill up some gas in it. the filler tube was rusted a bit and had a small hole so i removed it and am repairing it too. so i had to fill it by the rubber tube coming off the tank, LOL. i think it would have been easier and looked way funnier if i had gone to the gas station with my jack to fill it up.

 

the plan: wing it and see what happens. i dont always have a plan, usually i just go day by day and see where i end up.
