Cowgirl
On swapping out my 2.2 engine for another one. If you have not read my other thread, linky here: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=102511 It is a 1993 Subaru Legacy 2.2 2WD 180K wagon we would like to use for the summer, then resell ( I know, I know, but I don't think THREE carseats will fit in the back...) so we can purchase a vehicle more equipped to handle our growing family. DH is VERY short on "free time", so I need to know the good, bad, and potentially ugly!! We should be able to have our mechanic friend do the R&R, but it has not been discussed with him yet. So if it ends up with DH having to do this, we need hhheeeellppp!! And everyone's advice from USMB of course !
northguy
Depending on where in the Midwest you are, there are any number of resident experts who would most likely lend you a hand. Miles fox used to be a wrench for hire. Send out an S.O.S. And you may be surprised how many people come to the rescue.
NoahDL88
Those engines are pretty simple to pull and replace. Keep just about everything attached to the intake manifold. You'll have to remove the throttle, hill holder and cruise control cables. fuel lines and most wires can stay on the intake. There are a few plugs on the starboard side of the engine that will need to be disconnected as well as a small coolant hose underneath the manifold. If you don't have AC count yourself lucky, you don't need to open any hoses to get it out of the way though if you do. same as the power steering, it just kinda gets pushed out of the way. 4 bolts hold the engine to the tranny, 6 bolts for the exhaust. jack up the front of the tranny to help clear the engine mounts (2 bolts) when you separate the engine. only special tools I'd recommend are the ratcheting wrench, 14mm; and of course an engine hoist, buying will probably be about the same as renting, especially if you need to use it down the road.
