So I removed my carpet today...

While cleaning my car from the run on the beach, I decided that the mysterious floorwell water should be dealt with... (just in case some salt water got in there)

 

So I pulled the carpet and found alot of ducting for the heater. No surprise ive seen it before while installing my CB.

 

This time though... I looked a little better. The old duct that used to run up the B pillar on 86 year cars is on my 87, its just blocked off. Basically its only purpose was to keep the carpet in shape. Since the carpet was yanked, so were all these useless ducts. The rear passenger foot ones still worked, but since I will be herculining the floors it had to go too. Maybe I can route it to be a secondary foot warmer (for those who know me I wear sandals alot :rolleyes: )

 

I installed my GL-10 seats too. Less legroom, less headroom (than my XT seats) but my bum has a much cushier place to rest now :)

 

Best part is the moldy smell is gone finally! And afew pounds of extra plastic and carpeting :D

 

I am still trying to figure out a place to mount my CB radio (up above the water line) say on the dash somewhere or hanging from the headliner. (the car will be lifted someday and I know the Hatch Patrol people would lead me somewhere with lots of mud and water). I think I may install afew floorwell drain plugs too :D

Oh ya... I forgot to ask, what did you use to pull out all those tar pieces on the floor boards. Do you regret taking them out? (I imagine its noisier)

 

I have alot of wires that are exposed now, but when I herculine it all I am going to get some of that plastic wire tubing stuff to keep it all safe and chafe free :)

all my tar stuff had cracked up from my bottoming out and tweaking the floorboards, so all i had to do was hack with a screwdriver or chisel and most of it came out. In a few areas I tapped with a hammer to loosen it. Then there was the tar over the plugs which is gooey and doesnt break off. I just gouged it down as much as I could and smoothed it out. BTW I put my carpets back in but I cut them up so that they can be removed without unbolting the seats or center console. So when they get muddy I can pull them out, hose them off and let them air dry. I scraped off all of the recycled lint carp off the carpets too.

for CB install.... I removed the center roof /dome light and used the "CB adapter plate" - that *U* shaped thing to hang a CB with.... yeah, then measured the distance to the holes in the rafter beam and then set one screw in the long hole on one side, and then only had to drill one hole on the other side....

 

used the power wires for the dome light as power to the CB....

 

popped the headliner down just a bit in the rear of the wagon, feed the antenna cable from the tailgate straight to the domelight hole and then looped in twice....

 

Screwed the bracket in place, mounted the CB to it.... screwed in the antenna and bingo its installed.

 

** I also taped speaker wire to the antenna. That way I could have the 6X9 external speaker for the CB set in the rear of the wagon.

 

** I also had the time to run speaker wire with a mono headphone jack attached to it for the front passenger pillar and down near the heater fan and then up thru that rubber boot right behind the passenger strut tower... this wire went to the PA horn.

 

so the CB/PA was set solid..... the only odity... the rearview mirror was how I checked the Channel CB/WX/PA setting :>).

 

now that I have a GL-10 with a sunroof.... I haven't had the guts to do it with the glass sliding over that frame rail.... ya know..... i might deside to try it now that i have a few spare days before-

man, does it ever smell funny, under that carpet. i left all lmy tar stuff in, because i couldnt get it out to save my life. even without the carpet though, its alot noisier. and i have those thick floormats, to keep my heels off of sheet metal. perty cold in minnesota. but it got rid of the smell, and looks cool.
