4byRoo
So I'm already bitten by the soobie bug...and my 89 GL auto PB 4WD is fun...but not nearly fast nuf What I'm wondering is how elaborate a swap it would be to swap in the turbo engine and a 5 speed. Or if there's something else that can drop in and make me a bit faster. Anything over 200 HP is fine...this isn't a quarter mile animal, but it'd be nice to hit 65 in less than ten minutes, and tool on some unsuspecting Civics Cheap is key here-I bought the car with 81000 miles 3 days ago for 300 bucks...so this isn't a 10K project Thanks guys. Meeky Moose
just my .02 but if you want a turbo car, its easier to buy a turbo car than go through the headache of rewireing the hole thing.. and just a fyi, the stock turbo ea82T's only have around 135 hp.. to get over 200 there is alot of time, money, and blown head gaskets involved.. i'm going to be sticking my 3 speed auto PB trans in the dumpster here very shortly and swapping in the 5-speed pushbutton 4wd tranny.. should make the car a bit better on get up and go.. but SPFI is very limiting.. but thats why i have an RX for.. mmm turbo.. calebz
EA82T has 111(85-86)-115(87 and up) HP .. You want over 200HP for cheap, get another car. you have 2 options for a 200+ HP old school soob.. 1 Build the crap out of the engine.. Cost.. $2-4K 2 Put in an EJ drivetrain Cost $2-4K
4byRoo
SO not worth it. That's what I get for not reading before opening my big fat mouth. I'll suffer with the 90 HP wonder and the good gas mileage thank you very much Though I do want it to at least be a manual. How much is involved in that? Are there different options? Something about a push button 4wd or another option? What are the differences, which is easier, etc?
Skip
Mr.89 GL on the conversion. This board has a very good search function located on the main page near the bottom. It needs more than three letters in a request word so I tried "five speed conversion" for you. You might try some others. Here is the result Conversion to five speed search results
4byRoo
Haha, as I'm a member of many boards for many cars...I knew I was gonna get flak for the search function Thanks man...I'll check that out. I do it every time too...just post away without searching. It's people like me that waste bandwidth. Look, I'm doing it now, just talking about wasting bandwidth... lol, I suck! Gregg
There is still a lot you can do to increase the power of your car. Search the threads. Just the little I've done has boosted my XT from ~95 to ~105. The most expensive part was the $80 it cost for the mech to weld up my muffler My air filter setup cost me roughly $50, and half of that was shipping and handling for the filter and heat shield off eBay. ShawnW
Just so you guys know we made it so you can do 2 letter searches instead of the 3.
MilesFox
a 5spd conversion will make a BIG difference, as it will actually letthe motor hit its power curves in all the gears since the car is already 4wd, all the 5spd swap will be a direct bolt on, fit stock, even the shifter console plate! WagonsOnly
Plugging asterisks (*) in on both sides of a too-short word also eliminates the length constraints (for other boards' search features this is very helpful, it's less useful here). Your best bet is probably the EJ drivetrain...much better reliability with the old-school looks (as well as the old-school limiting factors, like suspension/tires/interior...) Hondasucks
and tool on some unsuspecting Civics You;d do that with just a 5 speed. Although my Turbowagon 0WNS when it comes to civics :-) The 5 speed swap is not all that hard... (Correct me if I leave anything out...) but here is what you need: Pedal assembly (all 3 pedals, bracket, etc...) Clutch cable Clutch return spring (Get off of a DL, those did not have the hill-holder) Flyhwheel, clutch, and pressure plate (Must be 4WD!) Flywheel bolts Transmission Here is where I am not quite sure, but on the EA81 cars, you have to change out the transmission crossmember and the crossmember brackets, but I don';t know on an EA82. You'll also need teh console piece that goes aroudn the shifter. You can swap in a dual range, for that you'll need the whole console as the PB and DR consoles are different. I swapped my 87 Turbowagon over from a PB 5 speed to a DR 5 speed out of an RX.

WJM
5spd swap is not hard. Power mods are easy! Intake exhaust...then...Delta cams. The 677-260 grind should also suit the SPFI engine.

This is my daily driver, I have enough toys (did I just say that?) The one thing this has to be is reliable...and I dunno if internals is on the list of reliability increasers Let me know where I can find some cheap bolt ons...homemade is always good too, as this was a cheap car to begin with

calebz
Seriously though.. I think the point has been made that there are few bolt ons for your car.. and none cheap.. you want exhaust? go to an exhaust shop and have them build it to your specs.. you want an intake? go to subspeed.com and pay too much for it, or make one yourself.. are you seeing a pattern here yet?
